Hello Gus23Ayr,

Welcome to the GMAT club. It is one of the great platforms to get information about the GMAT official test, Study plan, Section wise instructions, and many more. You are recommended to visit various posts and utilize this forum in the best efficient way.

Learning is a continuous process, and it shines with practice. Math is a very tricky subject that is easy to understand and difficult to apply.

Success in GMAT Math is entirely based on vital concepts, rigorous practice, complete knowledge of math question types and patterns, quick approaches, and time management.

Your current diagnostic score is shaky. You can schedule a Free counseling(https://calendly.com/mathrevolution/1-on-1-session) session for 20 mins with one of our experts to have detailed advice on your current study plans.

A score of 330 in the mock test is far indeed from the target score. The score tells that neither the Math nor the Verbal is above average. Hence, both sections have to be taken care of simultaneously. To improve, you will require consistent learning and practice. Also, keep your motivation high to learn.

Since we are a math expert, we will recommend you go through our post on the GMAT club, which gives a complete Breakdown of GMAT math questions and types: https://gmatclub.com/forum/overview-of- ... l#p1641411

Also, make a note of various possible combinations to achieve your target score. The possible scores will help you track your performance after taking the mock or practice test. It will also help you maintain balance in both the sections, and you will always be in a great position to allot the study hours to a specific area accordingly.

After visiting the post, now is the time to start with the basics. To strengthen the basic concept on various topics like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and word problems, you may refer to many free materials available in GMAT Club.

Solve as many questions as you can relate to different topics, and it is recommended that you try to connect with many proven experts. You can visit the Math Revolution and get access to our 7-days on-demand course for free trial lessons.

While concept learning, try solving 600 level questions by topic and be habitual of creating the error log. Prepare a list of all the doubts you face during solving and practicing questions. This practice will help you assess the topics in which you need more time to prepare. After solving as many questions as possible, take the 1st mock test and assess your performance. You may try our free diagnostic test once. Let some experts evaluate it to make you understand it better.

Continue the process with 650+ level by topic and then 700+ level questions by topic. The entire mock test should be completed in a disciplinary manner. Since this is a bit long journey, 1-on -1 tutoring can also be helpful to shorten the study period if your study budget is affordable.

Regular tests will reflect the positive change in the score, and hence, your confidence will boost up. Gradually, with the help of mock tests, you will be able to compete with time and hence will be able to learn time management.

We appreciate your time and patience in reading this reply.

Hi Gus23Ayr,

Many GMATers are unhappy with their initial practice scores, but you really shouldn't be. That 330 is just a measure of your skills right now - and you'll improve on that result over time as you learn more about the content, Tactics and little 'secrets' of the Exam. In addition, many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so if you've been studying for just a couple of weeks, you should not expect to have mastered any of the concepts or Tactics yet.

Since you have a list of specific Schools that you plan to apply to next year, you have plenty of time to continue to study for the GMAT. In that same way, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans NOW (so that you have lots of time to factor in the advice that they offer). Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) What “brand” of CATs/mocks did you use?
2) Did you answer all of the questions in each section (or did you leave any questions unanswered?)?
3) What is your overall goal score?

Hello Guys, Howdy?

Well, I just finalized my first mock test for GMAT and I've scored a 330 (17Q/17V). I'm a little concerned about this score, because it's a very low score and It does not puts me on a well situation for the schools I'm willing to apply (Fuqua, Poole - N.C. State, Kellog and Cameron - UNC wimlington and Herbet - Miami) and I need some serious advices in how to improve this score!

I'll give some background on my studies and my personal background below to give a better unsderstanding on my situation.

Studies Background: I've started to study recently about 2 weeks ago (Don't judge me guys, i know it´s a short time of preparation), I've acquired the OG Material and bought the complete Prepscholar Prep Course. I've been studying by these two materials consistently over thees past two weeks (about 2,5 hours on weekdays and 8 hours on weekends - I've to work form 9 to 6, mon to friday). This is my first time studying for GMAT, so everything is relatively new for me.

I've been trying to give a really good focus on reviewing what I got wrong, trying to understand how the questions are and working my ass off on the basics. I've seen some improvements. However this 330 score scared me a bit, because I was expecting at leat a 400, since Iwas evolving during these studies (I tyr to keep track of all my mistakes, writing down what I've got wrong, redoing them, etc.).

I do not know what should I be aware fo when preparing, I'm tryin my best to be consistent and to work on my skills.

Personal Background: Well here goeas a long story (haha). I'm 23 year old dude from Brazil, I've recently graduated (getting a business degree 3 months ago) from a really good University in Brazil (a top 10 university in the country/Top 15 Latin America). I'm not a rich guy and worked my ass off to get into that university, my family and I made a lot of scrificies when I was in High School for me to get into an Free Public University. I worked through all of my college time (Universities in Brazil have some options that helped with that, studying during the night and working during the day), always working from 9-6. During the first four year of college (it was a 5 year degree), I´ve worked with my dad and my uncle in our family's accounting office, in which I was one of the founding-partners - We've opened in 2016, when i've got in college.

During this time I´ve worked my ass off, having the chance to do financial and accounting consulting services for many comapanies in our region, these consultancy services were being made for small to big companies, in different sectors. For the past year, i´ve been working with a Big 4 (Erns&Young, to be precise), same thing, working in different projects within differente comapanies. In both experiences I´ve been doing very well, My family office grew from 0 to 60 clients and 6 employees in 4 years, considering the almost inexistent investment we´ve made when we opened the office and, in 8 months Iwas promoted at EY to a consultant position.

Alos, during the my college time, I've had the chance to do an exchange at UNC-Wilmington, it was a semester, but a very good experience. Which I've got a 3.87 GPA (Doing mostly high difficult classes). Studying in a school that was in my city and working through college helped me a lot to save money for this exchange which was a dream that came true.

Both school was quite demanding, even with all that I could manage to get good grades and finish with a 3.74 GPA. I'm not that stupid hahaha!

However the experience with GMAT have been a lot frustrating, it's a totally different test format from what we're used here in Brazil, that is applied in english (not my first language) and I have a totally busy week schedule.

As I mentioned before, I need some advice! I know I might being precipitaded in worrying about a 330 socre since i just started studying, but it got my nervous.

P.S.: I only intend to apply for the schools I´ve mentioned before on octber of next year!

Hi Gus23Ayr,

Do not take this score too seriously as it's just to assess your current level. I have a couple of articles for you which can help you understand the right way to prepare for GMAT.
How to start your GMAT Preparation?
How to effectively plan your studies for GMAT?
The 3 key skills you need to develop to score well on GMAT

I would suggest you to choose a resource which can help you:
  • Learn the concepts
  • Learn the methodology (Most important)
  • Practice questions
  • Analyze detailed solutions
  • Follow a study plan
  • Work on your weak areas

The need for a personalized study plan:

I understand that maintaining a balance between work life and studies can very challenging. To do so efficiently, it is always advisable to follow a study plan with clear deadlines.

As you are a working professional, a generic study plan wouldn’t suffice. You need something more personalized so that you can finish your preparation in given time. By personalized, I mean something which takes into account the number of hours you can dedicate in a week and creates a study plan based on that. It should have clear deadlines so that you can focus on finishing those tasks scheduled for the week. This will help you concentrate better.

I understand that creating a study plan can be a tedious task, so you can check GMATWHiz which can help you create a personalized study plan. There is a free trial for which you can register and create a study plan with weekly deadlines based on the number of hours you can dedicate in a week. This way it would be easy to follow that and also you can completely focus on the preparation instead of spending time on making study plan. And the best part about the plan is it is totally integrated with the course. All you need to do is click on the Start button and it will give you the right lessons and quizzes as you’re supposed to go through in the right order.

I can help you in a better way, if you can provide me a little more background about your GMAT prep. To give you a specific suggestion, it’s important for me to understand your current study strategy, your weak areas and the exact reason for not scoring well.

You can always write back to me here or the better way would be to connect over a call and have a discussion. You can schedule a free consultation call using the below link.
