Hi All - this is my first post. Have a feeling that this has likely been discussed ad-nauseum previously, but hoping you'll have mercy on me as a GMAT Club rookie. If this is in the wrong section of the site, please let me know and I will redirect the post there. Anyway, the reason I am posting is looking for some positive encouragement/persective on where I currently stand. I am approaching the home stretch here. I am taking the exam 6/26/19. My goal score is 730+.

I have used Manhattan Prep materials exclusively and here are the results of my CATs thus far:

1) MGMAT CAT 1 (3/25/19): 610 (38 Q, 35 V)
2) MGMAT CAT 2 (5/1/19): 640 (42 Q, 35 V)
3) MGMAT CAT 3 (5/7/19): 640 (42 Q 35 V)
4) MGMAT CAT 4 (5/30/19): 660 (43 Q 37 V)
5) MGMAT CAT 5 (6/9/19): 700 (40 Q 45 V)

Thinking that things finally clicked for me on the verbal side, but quant is vacillating. Few questions related to my CATs and next steps:

1) How much more challenging are MGMAT CATs really?
2) Realistic expectation for the real thing?
3) Are "GMATPrep" the official guide practice exams? Or are those different entirely. Reason I am asking is I want a more accurate idea of what my score is.

Thanks in advance for the help. I am so paranoid and standardized testing has always made me anxious. As a result I am very much in my head about this exam. Confidence/self-belief is the only thing standing in between me and my goal score at this point.

Hi
I would suggest to take a Gmatprep test immediately to gauge your actual level of preparation. Gmatprep tests are the official practice exams and are closest to the Gmat. Regarding your question on the MGMAT tests, they are generally tougher than the actual test, especially Quant. So if you scored around 700, you can expect more on the actual test. But you need to appear for the Gmatprep test for better understanding.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I will take an official GMAT CAT this upcoming weekend and report back with the results.

1) I have been studying since ~ 4/1/19
2) For studying, I have used Mprep materials in conjunction with the OG
3) Ideally, I would apply this upcoming round 1
4) Truly depends on my ultimate GMAT score. If I can get 730+, then I will target some M7. In general, I do not anticipate applying to any schools outside of the top 15.

Hi CanesCanes,

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. The most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC (the "GMATPrep CATs" you mentioned - the 2 free CATs, and each of the 2 that come with Exam Pack 1 and Exam Pack 2), but the CATs from Kaplan, MGMAT and Veritas are all 'close enough' to the real thing that they will provide you with a relatively realistic score assessment (assuming that you correctly take the CAT in a realistic fashion). The MGMAT CATs are generally regarded as being a little tougher than the real thing, but you should certainly plan to take one of the Official CATs next - and make sure to take it in a realistic fashion (take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, take it away from your home, at the same time of day as when you'll take the Official GMAT, etc.). Once you have that score, you should report back here. Once we have that result, we can discuss how best to proceed.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?

Goals:
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
4) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi CanesCanes,

Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so if you've been studying for just a little over 2 months, you might naturally continue to improve as you continue to study. That having been said, once you've taken one of the Official CATs, we'll be better able to narrow down the subjects that you should focus on going forward.

Hi CanesCanes,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. First off, when you take practice tests from companies other than GMAC, you may find some variation in algorithms used and thus variations in your score. That said, I think it would be a good idea to take an official MBA.com practice exam to see how you do. The results of that exam will provide us with a clearer picture of your current score and how far off you are from your 730 score goal. Once you take that practice exam, feel free to report back here, and I can provide some further advice.

In the meantime, would you like some general advice on how to improve your quant skills? Also, you may find it helpful to read this article about How to Increase Your GMAT Quant Score.
