So after 2 weeks of preparation (1 1/2 hours on aberage, only quant so far, almost exclusively basics, propbably around 50 OG questions only so far) I got a 590 score, 72% verbal, 36% quant.

My target score is, as it is for so many, 700. I got exactly 8 weeks left for my first attempt and I can schedule another exam date for early february 2016 of needed.

Do you think it is possible to improve to ~700 in 8 weeks left?

I definitely plan on studying significantly more than 1 1/2 hours per day for the remaining weeks. I know i have to improve Quant drastically. I am normally not terrible at math and i got decent to very good grades in math during college and high school. Just the tricky/quizlike nature of the gmat math is really hard for me to grasp.

I have the whole mgmat series and the official guide.

Is a 590 first mock test result terrible or is it actually a solid baseline for my goals? I really dont know what to think about it, and I am a little worried.

Hey ChristianKellner,

You can definitely improve quant in 8 weeks. We recommend examining multiple variations off of the same core question type so you are prepared when the same kind of question is asked in a slightly different way.

Here is a practice problem with an explanatory video you can try out: https://www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-t ... stion/1040

Thanks for the hint! I will definitely check it out. I noticed too that you have to know certain core question types. They always appear in slightly different variations, so if you master the core, you will definitely be ready for the variations.

Thus Quant can definitely be mastered to a certain degree with dedication. I already created an error log where i note all my "problematic question types". Just have to put in the work now.

Well, I just took my second Mgmat CAT and scored a 620 (Quant 38 41%, Verbal 36 81%). Even though that is certainly an improvement, I feel like it is still quite disappointing regarding Quant. I exclusively studied Quant during those 2 weeks before retaking only to improve by two meager points, and I also got lucky and guessed three Quant problems right. They only hope I have is that mgmat quant appears to be significantly harder than the real gmat quant.

As of now, I think I probably need to attend a supplementary course for Quant, since it seems like I cant break it on my own. Since I live in the countryside in Germany I consider online course options. I have heard good stuff about eGMAT. Any recommendations?

I still haven't studied for Verbal at all.

Hi ChristianKellner,

GMAC has publicly stated that a Test Taker's Official Score is within +-30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, this means that you've performed roughly the same on your CATs (+- a few points). With a Q38, you likely have some 'holes' in your math knowledge, are missing out on a lot of 'strategy-based' points (especially in DS) and you're making little mistakes throughout the section.

Since your concern right now is primarily about the Quant section, I think that you would find the EMPOWERgmat Quant resources to be quite helpful. We have a number of free resources at our website (www.empowergmat.com) that you can use to 'test out' the Course before you set up a Full Account.

If you have any additional questions, then feel free to contact me directly.

Hi, that was a quick reply!
I just did your first lesson about test it and I have to say, it was really good! The other online resources were not as interactive and just told the content, the fundamentals. While I still have some holes in the fundamentals, I think my main problem right now is definitely to rigorously follow strategies and to write everything down. The Mgmat series helped me a lot with the fundamentals. I just need to execute properly. And I am definitely making super much little mistakes. That is a huge problem for me.

I just seem to freeze on the CATs, having the time in mind, and then just trying to solve everything in my head. Funnily enough I am way better at DS, so you got that one wrong! And the reason for that is probably that I try to solve everything in my head. On PS you have to calculate and you just gonna miss so much easy stuff, when you dont take notes. So with DS, at least at my low Quant level, I still get away with my terrible approach strategies on DS but not on PS.

Bottom line: Your program seems to be really interesting and absolutely reasonable priced. So I will check it out further!

Edit 1: So I was also disappointed that I didnt improve significantly in Quant because it definitely felt like I was making progress. As I said, I learned so much abouth the content, the fundamentals, and I definitely got better with it. After I do a problem wrong and I read the solution, I am constantly grasping it super quick and I am super often on the right way. Like, I had the right approach, the right idea, but I didnt execute properly or just made super stupid mistakes or I just did too many steps at once.

Edit 2: I also take no notes in Verbal at all. So I am confident that when I just adapt a consistent strategy approach with obviously taking solid noted, I can boost my Verbal up to a really good percentile. But for now I will concentrate on Quant. One after the other.
