First time ever on internet from GMAT Prep: Enjoy :) Press kudos if you like this question :)

My doubt: what is wrong with E? the clause that follows 'as' explains the preceding clause.

Please help..

The intention of the sentence is 'more closely integrated than before', not of 'closely integrated more than before...'

Take a simpler example:
The teammates are working more closely than ever before. - The degree of closeness is higher. 'More' adds to the degree of closeness.
The teammates are working closely more than ever before. - The frequency of working closely is higher. 'More' adds to the frequency of working together.

(E) says 'more than ever before' i.e. frequency of close integration is higher which is the not the intention.
Also, the use of 'as' is incorrect. 'Events from one part may be transmitted to another instantaneously' is not the cause but the consequence of close integration. It could also be explained as an additional but related phenomenon. Therefore, the use of 'and that' in (D) is correct.

ok .. so we gotto use 'as' to explain the cause of something and not the consequence of something.. New learning for me. this will go into my takeaway notes :)
thanks a lot . .
