first time taking GMAT and a bit of a discrepancy!
so, just got out of the GMAT. got some.. interesting scores? i’m confused on my balance. for reference, grew up flying through school, really had to study in college, and took the gre with similar (but much less drastic) results. in high school i got a 35 on the ACT, with scores of 36 on everything and a score of 32 on math. i like math, but test takers are good at tripping me up exactly where they want to when it comes to math on standardized tests. cue the GRE, i can’t remember my scores atm but verbal was 95th percentile while math was 67th.
well, i just got out of the GMAT and received my scores.
44 quant (44th percentile)
44 verbal (98th percentile)
6 IR (64th percentile)
for a scaled score of 710.
the score sounds good from the outside but break it down between quant and verbal and obviously there’s a huge discrepancy. i’m applying for traditional full-time MBAs in person and potentially a few virtual programs as well. the applications on the docket right now are state schools like tennessee and south carolina, as well as 1-2 smaller local schools and maybe a couple of random programs in proximity to college friends just to see what happens. only one program i’m applying to (east tennessee state university) requires the GMAT (the rest GRE or GMAT) so i’m figuring my chances are alright for what i’m aiming for. verbal sections of tests come easily to me as i am able to sniff through traps easily and have a solid understanding of grammar.
so, the point of this post and the question i’m asking is… how will schools perceive me and do you think it will heavily impact my chances? i’m considering retaking the GMAT and trying to improve my scores but i also may just submit my GRE scores as they seem to paint a more well-rounded picture. i am good at math in the classroom, and frequently use math in my job with accuracy, but tend to be clumsy on standardized tests. thanks in advance and please roast me gently. i am proud but confused lol
p.s. i had a great experience at my local pearson center. a lot of friends have utilized that center and similarly liked it. woo!

Hi. Congratulations on your score!
This can be a great score depending on your profile. If you are an investment banker or somebody who does Quant a lot, the score will reset my brows but if you are more of an idealist person and perhaps somebody from the sides of marketing and sales, the score shows the diversity some of the schools are looking for.
This is a pretty unique and memorable score. One of the users, a former moderator Michmax3 had it and went to Booth I think… she had a marketing background. I think she also got into Ross and Kellogg…. So definitely not a score they would keep you out of business schools. If you are applying in R1 in the fall, You can definitely try to retake and see if you can improve it and become more eligible for a merit scholarship. Or if you are indeed applying to some of the smaller schools, they will love anything with the seven on it. I wouldn’t worry about making it more rounded. Good chance you will get offered a scholarship even.
PS. Not sure what roasting you are requesting, but this is a great score with a great story 👍
