Five students from a class have been shortlisted for a scholarship based on their scores in four subjects: Math, Physics, English, and Biology. The minimum qualifying score may differ by subject, and each subject is equally weighted in the evaluation. The table below lists the scores received by each student, with a maximum possible score of 80 per subject.

StudentsMathPhysicsEnglishBiology
Ana80757268
Boris75757167
Caroline79747278
Donald76757265
Eva73777065

For each of the following statements, select True if the statement can be verified to be true based on the information provided. Otherwise, select False.

Official Solution:

Statement 1:

Sorting by scores in each subject shows that Ana consistently had the highest or second-highest scores across all subjects. Therefore, if only two students were to be selected for the scholarship, Ana would have to be one of them. Therefore, this statement is True.

Statement 2:

In Biology, Donald had a lower score than both Boris and Caroline—65 compared to 67 and 78, respectively. If the minimum required score in Biology was 66 or 67, Donald would not qualify for the scholarship. Therefore, this statement is False.

Statement 3:

A minimum required score of 80% corresponds to a score of 64 in each subject. However, none of the students have a score below 64 in any subject. Therefore, if the minimum were set at 64, all students would qualify for the scholarship. Therefore, this statement is False.

Correct answer:

If only two students were to be selected for the scholarship, then Ana would have been one of them. "True"

If Boris and Caroline were to be selected for the scholarship, then Donald would have also been selected. "False"

If the minimum required score were set at 80% in each subject, then only three students would have qualified for the scholarship. "False"
Statement 2 solution is NOT clear.
As you have mentioned- "In Biology, Donald had a lower score than both Boris and Caroline—65 compared to 67 and 78, respectively."
But what about Math - Donald's score 76 > Boris's 75 ; In English also- Donald's score 72 > Boris's 71 and in Physics, both Donald & Boris have the same score.

So, if we compare- Boris leads only in 1 subject (Biology) while Donald leads in 2 subjects ( Math & English).
Kindly explain this answer and suggest in case I am approaching the question incorrectly??

You’ve misunderstood how the question works.

The rule is: You pass if your score is greater than or equal to the minimum qualifying score in each subject. This means the minimum qualifying score might differ by subject, and failing to meet it in even one subject disqualifies you, regardless of performance in other subjects.

In Math, Physics, and English, Donald either ties or outperforms Boris and Caroline. However, in Biology, Donald’s score (65) is less than both Boris (67) and Caroline (78). If the minimum qualifying score in Biology were set at 66 or 67, Donald would fail because he does not meet or exceed that threshold in Biology, even though he meets it in other subjects.

This is why the statement specifically evaluates Biology and concludes that Donald would not qualify under the given hypothetical scenario.

Using the same logic, if the minimum qualifying score for Biology was set at 70, Ana would not qualify despite her high total score. Because this is an unknown constraint, we cannot say Ana would be selected. So statement 1 cannot be verified to be true.

Your case contradicts the statement:

If only two students were to be selected for the scholarship, then Ana would have been one of them.

If Biology minimum is 70, Ana fails, but then only Caroline qualifies, so you cannot select two students.
