Here is an interesting article about "how to ruin your application essay".
Although anyone seems to know the rules best, the article is a good reminder for those who have just started with their essays:

hehe 27pages, she must be really wanting to get into UCLA. I think they should give her a break. :lol:

people can put a gun to my head, and i wouldn't be able to crank out a 27page essay. hehe

I was a little surprised to see that "Not Answering The Question" wasn't on the list. Especially when adapting essays from other schools, this can be a major problem. Even when the questions are in the same genre, they often contain subtleties that are glossed over. I'm sure that Adcoms can sense these essays from a mile away and dock the applicant for a potential lack of interest.
