For a science project, Sammy observed a chipmunk and a squirrel stashing acorns in holes. The chipmunk hid 3 acorns in each of the holes it dug. The squirrel hid 4 acorns in each of the holes it dug. They each hid the same number of acorns, although the squirrel needed 4 fewer holes. How many acorns did the chipmunk hide?

Let the hidden number of acorns for each animal be x
\(\frac{x}{3}\) is the number of holes made by chipmunk
\(\frac{x}{4}\) is the number of holes made by squirrel
\(\frac{x}{3}\)-\(\frac{x}{4}\)=4
x=48

Say chipmunk used x holes, then squirrel used x-4
Ch hid 3 acorns in each so in total it hid 3x
And sq hid 4(x-4)
And given 3x=4(x-4), so x=16
Hence chipmunk hid 3*16=48 acorns.
D is the answer.
