Official Explanation

2. The passage states all of the following about mercury EXCEPT:

Difficulty Level: 550

Analyze the Question Stem:

The word “states” in the stem signals a Detail question, but with a twist. In a Detail EXCEPT, the incorrect choices are details from the passage, while the right answer is not.

Research the Relevant Text:

For a Detail question, use the passage map to find the details needed to answer the question. Paragraph 2 discusses mercury, so research the details there to make a prediction.

Make a Prediction:

Mercury is dangerous for children, is a powerful toxin, and has been in fish in increased levels according to recent studies. Since this is an EXCEPT question, though, remember that these details will show up in the incorrect answer choices.

Evaluate the Answer Choices:

(C) is correct. Even though the author does mention people with a family history of heart disease, it's not in the context of mercury. This is a faulty use of detail.

(A), (B), and (E) can be eliminated because they are the predicted dangers of mercury. The third paragraph mentions that swordfish is relatively high in mercury content, so (D) is out.

Answer: C

TAKEAWAY: The right answer to a Detail EXCEPT question is not predictable, but at least some of the incorrect choices are.

Official Explanation

3. In the first paragraph, why does the author state that doctors often encourage some people to eat fish?

Difficulty Level: 500

Analyze the Question Stem:

The words “why does the author state” signal that this is a Logic question.

Research the Relevant Text:

The passage map shows that the first paragraph points out the benefits of fish consumption, and the overall purpose is to argue that consumers should not give up fish consumption, but rather be conscious of the type of fish consumed.

Make a Prediction:

The author discusses the doctors' recommendation to eat fish to show that fish can have a healthy effect on these people.

Evaluate the Answer Choices:

(A) fits the prediction and is correct.

(B) and (C) both refer to potential dangers of fish consumption, which was discussed in the second paragraph. Since the doctors' recommendation came in the first paragraph, these two choices don't explain why it was made.

(D) is a distortion. The recommendation is targeted specifically to people with a history of heart disease.

(E) is a complete distortion. The author does not discuss the absurdity of doctors' advice.

Answer: A

TAKEAWAY: Remember that a Logic question asks why a detail is included. The detail mentioned will almost always contribute to the purpose of the paragraph it is in and to the purpose of the overall passage.

However, recent studies by a government environmental agency have noted an alarming increase in the toxins present in most fish, especially the presence of the metal mercury.
