Sentence is akward to me.
I have a doubt with the correct option(E)

For smaller retailers and Web sites, which pay regular mail rates and may be shipping from only one location, free shipping is not nearly as affordable and often must be added into prices

For smaller retailers and Web sites, which pay regular mail rates and may ship from only one location, free shipping is not nearly as affordable and often must be be added into prices

Is the usage of AS correct here. I think is not as affordable as X should be used here. Am i wrong.

Gurus please help .

A. which pay regular mail rates and may be shipping from only one location, free shipping is not nearly as affordable and often must
B. that pay regular mail rates and may ship from only one location, free shipping is not nearly as affordable and often must
C. who pay regular mail rates and may ship from only one location, free shipping is not nearly so affordable and it often must
D. which pays regular mail rates and may ship from only one location, free shipping is not as nearly affordable and often must
E. which pay regular mail rates and may ship from only one location, free shipping is not nearly as affordable and often must

I know which will refer to the preceding word (website)

In this example which will not refer to compound subject - smaller retailers and web sites?

Same doubt here, could anybody please clarify. This question provides the opportunity for a huge takeaway in 'which' vs 'that construction

Thanks!

"Which" should refer to both smaller retailers and websites in the above example.
If you want "which" to refer to only websites, you can modify the sentence as follows:
For smaller retailers and FOR websites, which...

I am a little confused as to which tense do we have here

"Pay regular rates " --- present tense
"may be shipping " --- is this present continuous tense , though may is a likelihood !!

Prasad, Thanks
But still unclear on 'which' vs 'that' split on B and E

Could you please elaborate a little bit more on why one is right and the other wrong?

Thanks
Cheers!

Hi All,

I picked the correct option but still do like the wording associated.

The right answer is E. If you see the last section of the line 'free shipping is not nearly as affordable and often must be added into prices'

I can understand that free shipping is not nearly affordable but I am unable to understand the 'must be added into prices'.

It sounds to me like...'free shipping must be added into the prices' (instead it should say the 'shipping charges must be added into th prices')

Does any one agree.

Hi Shriram,

True,This sentence is so awkward meaning wise.

Option E sounds like "free shipping is not nearly as affordable and often must be added"???? Why will it be added if its not affordable.

How can you add free shipping to prices? Shipping rates/regular mail rates(as mentioned in the "which" clause) have to be added to the prices.

There has to be a reference to what has to be added again after the and.

Regards,
Dom.

Between options B and E, I chose Option B because in my opinion 'which' can't refer to a clause. Which only refers to the noun preceding comma.
And here the noun preceding comma is Web sites and Web sites can't pay regular mail rates. Rather retailers pay for mail rates. Therefore the use of 'That' is more suitable.

Please clarify.

There is a comma before the underlined portion, so here which will be a right construction.
,+that- as a modifier generally wrong.... GMAT prefers , which...............
