heh.

Nothing "against" D.

B is much more concise and compact ("supporting" versus "in support of", for example), and there's nothing wrong with it. The parenthetic clause is offset by commas, and the sentence would work just fine if the phrase was removed. That, friends, is good use of a comma.

Fossil found recently in India provide evidence supporting the theory of land mammals returning to the water that later evolved into modern whales.

a.
b. supporting the theory that land mammals, after returning to the water,
c. that supports the theory of land mammals that returned to the water
and that later
d. in support of the theory that land mammals returned to the water and
that they later
e. of support for the theory of land mammals that returned to the water
and after

there was only one theory
D is not correct

theory that X and that Y
this construct suggests that there were more than one theory
B is best.

I pick B.

a) The sentence makes it sounds like that the "water" was the thing evolved not the animals.
c) I don't know what "that" is called, but there are too many of them.... that supports... that returned... and that later.
d) in support of is not concise.. it is better if you use "to support" or "supporting"
e) I think "of support" is not idiomatic

B is the most concise!
