C is my man.
(A) sounds like the theory itself is "returning to the water"
(B) awkward
(C) ANSWER
(D) "and that they later" is redundant
(E) "after evolved into" is wrong
*I didn't mention all the errors/awkwardness in the answer choices given...perhaps there are better reasons as to why they are not answers.
