Look at the answer choices. We (almost certainly) need something that results in an integer when we take 1/3 and also results in an integer when we take 1/4. A, C, and D are all out. Let's try B.
$36 total.
Mark spent $3 less than $12, so Mark spent $9.
Ellen spent $2 more than $9, so Ellen spent $11.
Dennis spent $9.
Jane spent $7.
Does 9+11+9+7=36? Yep.
Answer choice B.

Suppose total amount given to spend was P.
Mark spent (P/3)-3.
Ellen Spent (P/4)+2
Dennis Spent P/4
Jane spent 7$
so, according to question, (P/3)-3 + (P/4)+2 +(P/4) +7 = P
Solving this, P= 36$. OB.
