Hi, can someone please explain which of the following sentence is correct, and why ?
a) he jumped into a forty foot deep well
b) he jumped into a forty feet deep well
Answer with the explanation would be highly appreciated.
Thanks.
First - let's clarify that this is not a subject/verb agreement issue. "He" is the subject and "jumped" is the verb and there are no agreement issues as "jumped" would work with either singular or plural subjects. I would categorize this as an idiom/modifier issue (and I wouldn't expect to see many questions dealing with this issue on the GMAT).
The correct answer is A. When you are using measurements as adjectives before the noun (here modifying the noun "well"), you use the singular form.
"Forty foot well"
"Sixteen hundred foot skyscraper"
"Twenty foot boat"
If the measurement comes after the noun it is plural. "He jumped into a well that is forty feet deep." "The new skyscraper will be reach into the sky sixteen hundred feet".
