It is D.
A - modifier problem. If it were to use Using, it would have been my pick.
B - Adverb modifier problem
C - when he makes is wrong..
E - non restrictive relative clause and leaves "Them" with nothing to point to.
My choice is between A and D
I made the choice based on meaning of the sentence.
Use of material does not seem merit the word 'skillfully', it is the integration that is requires 'skill'.
Frank Lloyd Wright, in his use of structural elements, skillfully integrates them with the aesthetic components of a building.
(A) Frank Lloyd Wright, in his use of structural elements, skillfully integrates them with the aesthetic components of a building
" them " refers to what ?
so rejected
(B) Frank Lloyd Wright skillfully, in his use of structural elements, integrates them with the aesthetic components of a building
wrong construction of the sentence
(C) Frank Lloyd Wright, when he makes use of structural elements, skillfully integrates them with the aesthetic components of a building
Best Pick
(D) Frank Lloyd Wright skillfully uses structural elements of buildings and integrates them with the aesthetic components
not sure but it sounds different meaning
(E) Frank Lloyd Wright, who uses structural elements, skillfully integrates them with the aesthetic components of a building
Explanation:
Spot the Concept Being Tested:
Modifiers: Look for descriptive phrases segmented out by commas.
In this case "In his use of structural elements" is being used to modify Frank Lloyd Wright.
Pronouns: Look for pronouns in the underlined parts.
In this case them is used to replace "structural elements".
Decide on a Fix:
The rule for Modifiers is that the modifier must be as close as possible to the thing it modifies.
Here the modifier satifies that rule.
The rule for Pronouns is that the pronoun must be used unambiguously (clearly) to a valid (correct in value) subject.
The pronoun here is used correctly and unambiguously if it were to refer to the elements. However since the elements are in the modifier, they are not actually a part of the sentence. Without the modifier the sentence has no target for the pronoun
We need a version that clarifies this problem.
POE:
Using the Modifier concept.
Choice B moves the modifier to an inappropriate spot appearing to now modify the skill..
Eliminate B.
Choice C changes the modifier to add when which indicates time. Since Wright is not a time this is also incorrect.
Eliminate C
Using the Pronoun concept.
Choice A is has the orginal problem.
Eliminate A.
Choice E repeats that problem.
Eliminate E.
Chunk and Compare:
No need.
Reread Sentence With Your Choice and Choose an Answer:
Choose D.
