Re: Franny can type 80 words per minute and Matt can type 60 words per [#permalink]
Franny's efficiency = 80 words per minute = 4800 words/Hr
Matt's efficiency = 60 words per minute = 3600 words/Hr

Fanny completes 9600 words in 2 hours and is left with 4400 words for Matt to complete..

Matt will complete that in 4400/3600 = 11/9 Hours...ans D

Franny can type 80 words per minute and Matt can type 60 words per minute. If the two together must type up a 14,000-word paper and each person can type for at most 2 hours, what is the least amount of time, in hours, that Matt must type?

A. 2
B. 5/6
C. 11/12
D. 11/9
E. 35/9

We are given that Franny can type 80 words per minute or 80 x 60 = 4800 words per hour. If she types for 2 hours (the maximum she can type), then she will have 4800 x 2 = 9600 words. Thus, there are 14,000 - 9600 = 4,400 words left for Matt to type.

Since Matt can type at a rate of 60 words per minute, or 60 x 60 = 3600 words per hour, the time he will have to spend typing is:

4,400/3,600 = 44/36 = 11/9 hours

Hi All,

The answer choices to this question provide a really big 'shortcut' that can help you to cut down on the amount of math that is necessary to answer this question.

To start, we're told that Franny and Matt can each type up to 2 hours, but we're asked for the LEAST amount of time (in hours) that Matt would need to type. Thus, the answer is almost certainly going to be LESS than 2. Eliminate Answer A and Answer E (this answer is almost 4 hours, which is simply not an option).

Given Franny's rate (80 words/minute), we know that in 2 hours she would type (2)(60)(80) = 9600 words. This leaves 14,000 - 9,600 = 4,400 words for Matt.

Given Mat's rate (60 words/minute), the 4400 words would take 4400/60 = OVER 60 minutes. You don't need to calculate the exact value - it's enough to note that Matt would need to spend MORE than 1 hour typing. Answers B and C are LESS than 1 hour, so there's only one answer that makes sense...

Final Answer:

Franny: 80 words per minute

=> Therefore, in 1 hour : 80 * 60 = 4800.

Matt: 60 words per minute

=> Therefore, in 1 hour : 60 * 60 = 3600.

The least amount of time that Matt must type means Franny should type for more hours.

One can type for at most 2 hours.

Therefore, Franny 2 hour's work = 4800 + 4800 = 9600 words.

Work to be completed: 14,000

Remaining work: 14,000 - 9,600 = 4,400

Matt to finish 4,400 words: \(\frac{4,400 }{ 3,600}\) = \(\frac{44}{36}\) = \(\frac{11}{9}\) hours
