The following appeared in a letter to the political leader of the nation of Werneria from one of her economic advisors:
"Werneria has long relied on tourism as the basis of its economy. But due to increasing industrial pollution, many of our national parks are no longer as attractive as they once were, and revenue from tourism has been falling for the past five years. Fortunately, large mineral deposits have recently been discovered in some of those parks. If we allow these deposits to be mined, the mining companies will surely contribute substantial tax revenue to our government and provide hundreds of jobs for Wernerians who previously worked in the tourism industry. On the other hand, without mining, the revenue from the national parks will continue to decline. Thus, permitting the mining of our national parks is the best way for Werneria to thrive economically."
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
