Hi Everyone,
I am looking for advice on
which schools are within my reach. Here is some information to give you guys a baseline:
Undergraduate Institution - UC Berkeley 2012
Undergraduate Degree - Bachelor of Arts in Political Economy with a Specialization in Globalization
Undergraduate GPA - 2.95 (2 years at UC Berkeley) & 3.60 (2 years at community college before)
GMAT - 670 Q48 V34 IR5 AWA6 (taking this a 3rd time to try to break 700; took 3 practice tests all 730+ recently, working on going in with the right mind set this time around)
Work Experience (from current to previous; 4-5 years) - Non-profit/Consulting Entrepreneur, Technology, Boutique Investment Banking, Wealth Management
Brief Why MBA and Why Now? I quit my job in early 2016 to start my own consulting business centered around digital marketing and sales. After several years of selling enterprise marketing and sales software, I wanted to bring my experience to small businesses. I began to use my technical skills to consult local small businesses on how to improve their online presence (focused on B2C/consumer goods) across all digital channels and how to develop a sales team that would carry consistent performance that would drive businesses to their full potential. After a year of doing so, I have found that I lack the understanding of how to scale my organization, hire people effectively and manage my own marketing and sales (ironically enough). I struggled to accept that I needed help, and in the process, I didn't hire individuals to aid me. This resulted in my losing a couple of valuable contracts that I couldn't maintain on my own . Because of this failure, I want to pursue an MBA to re-calibrate my academic basis, and learn to leverage human capital in developing my own business. I think an MBA would help me do so because I could interact with a larger breadth of people from various industries and settings to not only share my knowledge and ideas with but also to learn from.
Although I quit my job and started my own business, I am also serving as a marketing and sales advisor for a non-profit. We have expanded from 15 to 90 customers (large companies) in a matters of 6 months as a result of my help. The non-profit is focused on recycling food waste. Millions and millions of pounds of food are wasted on a daily basis by restaurants, caterers, wholesalers, distributors, technology companies (and others who purchase food for corporate events), and even individual families. We help to alleviate that problem (I don't want to reveal too much because I'm still on the edge in terms of even mentioning this in my essays). I anticipate continuing to work with this non-profit, and I believe that acquiring an MBA would be excellent in helping to scale this business from an academic and networking standpoint.
So in short, I intend on acquiring an MBA to further my academic knowledge, expand my mind (and hopefully expand others’) by interacting with various professionals from different industries/backgrounds, and ultimately, help to further the businesses that I’m currently working on which have great potential to be impactful on the sustainable economy and small businesses.
If you guys need more information, please don't hesitate to ask. Having said all of this, I don't know which schools I should apply to because my GPA and GMAT are super low. However, I think I have a compelling, unique story to share.
Thoughts?
