I got D too.

Can't find the error on D and can't see why E is better.

The whole event occurred during a particular period between x and Y, which is a closed chapter now. The correct expression for such an en event is to use simple past and no perfect tenses or present tense. That is why B, C and D are out. As you see E is too awkward in construction using passive voice. A is the one; only the OE should say why it is not

(A) Increased BY X% not between... WRONG
(B) Wordy, it should be "sales increased by 5 to 10 %" here it is wordy... WRONG
(C) Increased BY X%... WRONG
(D) OK, but the tense is wrong here... WRONG
(E) Strange but correct...

Hope it helps

The OA is A indeed. It doesn't hurt to look around in case the questions such as these get ambiguous. from-1982-to-1987-sales-of-new-small-boats-increased-between-133454.html?fl=similar

Request you not to post the answer in question window. It prevents us to analyze the question knowing the answer.

Between X and Y is a right idiom and A is a right choice and does not changes the meaning.
while Choice E is awkward and changes the intended meaning.
