Hi Stenus,

Since the level of competition is so high when you apply to certain Business Schools (and the available "spots" are more limited in the latter Rounds), it's important to make sure that your application is as strong as you can make it. As such, you might find it helpful to work with an Admissions Expert (there's a Forum full of them on this site) - even if you choose not to hire one, at the very least you can pose some questions and use whatever suggestions they offer to your advantage.

I got my AWA score today. I only scored a 4.0. I didn't really prepare for the AWA section, but I thought I could score at least a 4.5. Do you think it will hurt my application? I did pretty well on the TOEFL (including the Essay) and also wrote an excellent (A) Bachelor's Thesis in English.

Hi Stenus,

The AWA Score is not a big part of the application process and as long as you score a 4.0 (which you did), then you should be fine. There's a general "red flag" whenever someone scores a 3.5 or lower - that score range implies a number of serious potential problems: a lack of focus, an inability to follow instructions, rambling/disorganized thought, the inability to effectively communicate with written words, etc. - things that Business Schools DON'T want in an applicant. The yearly AWA average tends to be right around a 4.3, but since the score is in half-point increments, scoring a 4.0 or 4.5 is fairly common - and by extension, acceptable.
