Hey guys. Here's run down of my ordeal, which is finally, thankfully, over. I first took the GMAT two years ago... after having taken only one practice exam (Kaplan CAT... got a 530). For some reason, I thought I was ready for the real deal. The resulting 650 (Q38, V41) proved that I was not ready. I applied to Chicago and Virginia anyway in the hopes that they'd overlook my low GMAT and the fact that I hadn't graduated yet (was working full time & going to school), and just let me in on my good looks

. Unfortunately, I didn't send them a picture with my application, so they denied me
Fast-forward two years. Now that I graduated and my ego has recovered enough, I thought I'd try it again. This time, however, I did not underestimate it. I took every practice test I could get my hands on. For those of you that are looking, here are some tips:
- 800score.com has a decent product to practice your timing with, but don't expect very challenging quant questions.
- Kaplan has the best CAT tests, hands down. Sufficiently difficult, and sufficiently time consuming. Plus, their harsher-than-average scoring keeps you on your toes. Note that this was their CAT tests, not their ONE online test, which had the same content, but which lacked in many other ways.
- I found Princeton Review's online exams too late to give them a thorough run-through, but I really liked what I saw, and the questions were sufficiently challenging.
Anyhow, I studied for three or four weeks, and thanks to looming round 1 deadlines, had to hurry-up and take the test. Unfortunately, as happened with my first try, my second try at GMAT quant resulted in having to skip through the last 6 or so questions to avoid being cut off by the buzzer. This, of course, had a devistating effect on my overall score, which ended up being 670 (39Q, 42V only 1 point increase in each category). This ticked me off... I was not going to let this stupid test beat me. So, like an idiot, I signed up for the very next possible session - three days later (yes, in the next calendar month, so it's ok.) I knew going into it that my weakness was my quant skill and speed, so I drilled it hard. Using more practice tests, and reading a LOT of postings on this site (THANKS GUYS!!!) I boned up enough to take another stab. So, I got up a 6am today, showered, dressed, and drove out to the area of the test center, had some breakfast, and went in and took the GMAT for the third friggin time. I was fairly sure that I screwed up the quant again (hit the "confirm answer" button, and then thought "NO, it's... oh well"), but I knew that I did NOT skip 6 questions like the last time (Wednesday)... so before I saw that score screen I was all messed up. I was preparing myself for the worst... another 600-something, or even wose... 500-something. Unbelievabily, it said 700 (45Q!!, 41V)!!! I am (and my poor, neglected girlfriend is) soooo relieved!!! Now, all I have to do is write the best essays ever written in the history of mankind, and I'll be all set
Thanks again to all of you that post on this site. It was very helpful learning from each of you, and knowing that I wasn't alone in this. Good luck to everyone that has yet to take it. Just remember, practice, practice, practice... and when all else fails, gamble another $225 that you can do better like I did
