Wanted to write up my GMAT experience in case it's useful to anyone still grinding through prep.
BackgroundFor starters I did not have a lot of confidence in my standardized test abilities... I took the ACT 10 years ago but didn't prepare seriously for it at the time. I'm in the military and so when planning to transition out to business school I knew the GMAT would be a necessary evil in the process and require a lot of investment.
I studied on my own for 5-6 months using free resources on YouTube and the Official Guides. Studied about 2 hours a day during the week when I had time. Took my first official practice exam and got a
535, which was genuinely so disheartening. I felt like I had wasted so much time up to this point. I reached out to a couple mentors (what I should have done from square one) and both of them told me to take a look at
Target Test Prep. Immediately I into my free trial I realized this was going to change my process dramatically.
What made the difference1. The structured curriculum. This was the single biggest change. TTP doesn't just hand you a pile of practice questions, it teaches foundational concepts in a deliberate order, and each one builds on the last. By the time the questions got genuinely hard, I wasn't guessing at a technique. I was applying something I'd already built from the ground up three chapters earlier. It's the difference between memorizing solutions and actually understanding the machinery underneath them, and contributes to true mastery .
It also keeps things incredibly consistent and efficient. My schedule (like I'm sure most people on this website as well) is unpredictable and my hours are long, and having a clear sequence meant I never wasted energy deciding what to work on. I just opened the platform and executed the next block.
2. The comprehensiveness. There was not one concept on
any of my practice / official exams that didn't show up somewhere in my prep. Zero surprises. If you've ever had that moment mid-exam where a question type appears and you realize you've never encountered it before — that didn't happen once. That really helped my confidence going into test day.
Test day and closing thoughtsI tested in person. I was calm, my timing held up, and the exam felt genuinely similar to what I'd been doing in practice for months. Final score:
685. A 150-point jump from where I started. I can confidently say I would not have seen this improvement if it weren't for the TTP Dedicated Self-Study product, and I will always refer people to the program as their first step in GMAT / GRE prep.
Happy to answer questions if anyone wants to reach out.
