From a magazine article: Self-confidence is a dangerous virtue: it often degenerates into the vice of arrogance. The danger of arrogance is evident to all who care to look. How much more humane the twentieth century would have been without the arrogant self-confidence of a Hitler or a Stalin.
The author attempts to persuade by doing all of the following EXCEPT:
(A) Using extreme cases to evoke an emotional response
(B) Introducing value-laden terms, such as “vice”
(C) Illustrating the danger of arrogance
(D) Appealing to authority to substantiate an assertion
(E) Implying that Hitler’s arrogance arose from self-confidence

The argument does A (invoking Hitler and Stalin), it does B (the word "vice" appears in the argument), it does C (again by invoking Hitler and Stalin), and following the logic of the argument, it does suggest that Hitler's self-confidence led to a dangerous arrogance, so it does E. Nowhere does the argument appeal to any authority to make its point (it does not, for example, quote an expert or cite some research), so D is the right answer.

Here is my analysis of this argument:
From a magazine article:
- Self-confidence is a dangerous virtue: it often degenerates into the vice of arrogance.
(B) Introducing value-laden terms, such as “vice”
- The danger of arrogance is evident to all who care to look.
(C) Illustrating the danger of arrogance -> I put C here because this sentence will lead to an illustration in the next idea.
- How much more humane the twentieth century would have been without the arrogant self-confidence of a Hitler or a Stalin.
(A) Using extreme cases to evoke an emotional response -> Hitler and Stalin are not the representation of Human in 20th Century, how about Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King. Can we say that Human 20th Century were more humane by citing these examples?
(E) Implying that Hitler’s arrogance arose from self-confidence -> Hitler was used as illustration for the argument, something must be wrong with Hitler (not directly stated but can be read between the line that Hitler was self-confident -> arrogance
*D is Correct.
(D) Appealing to authority to substantiate an assertion.
Appealing to authority error means people rely on certain sources to make the argument sound. For example: Einstein thinks Physics is piece of cake does not mean Physics is easy for common people (at least it is not right for me:) )
