I agree w/ GMATPill -- that first test is really your diagnostic opportunity. I am sure that even before you take your first practice exam -- you already have a 'target score' in mind. Taking that first exam gets you to an idea of whether or not you are in the right neighborhood. The gap (or lack thereof) between your first practice exam and your target score inform a GREAT deal of your plan from that point forward.
