Hi,
I have been accepted to Northwestern's JDMBA program. I am very excited, but also worried about financing the program despite also receiving a scholarship. Has anyone had experience continuing to hold a job while pursuing an MBA or law degree that they wouldn't mind sharing?
Thank you!
Congratulations! Great job!
You have 3 years ahead of you and not having an income all that time is pretty annoying, and scarry to live off debt. Many do some work while at bschool... some. With a few exceptions, the stuff people worked on was 1) Their old job they were helping out and making decent money helping with - gets frustrating sometime as there is no closure 2) Mindless jobs to help with financial shortfalls 3) Continuing their summer internships or working on their own startups. JD will be super hard while holding a job (unless you are a genius that is) - the amount of reading is insane.
If you are planning to keep your old/current job, I would set their expectations for 10 hrs/week during the first semester. You are likely to exceed it but I would not want to be on the hook for 20 hrs during my first trimester/quarter finals in October... Would 10 hrs/week be even an option? The MBA program is intense and the free time you have is supposed to be spent on development of your profile, learning new skills, exploring your interests and passions, and taking advantage of the experience. Why go on vacation to Hawaii, pay high room rate and then work half the time? Perhaps go for half the time but take all of it off.
The biggest challenge will be in your last bschool year (I think Kellogg does JD in between the 2 bschool years, is that right)? You will have some more availability and more free time, reason being to give you more opportunities to network, and find a great job you have gone to the program for, not keep your old job in the first place.
