For all positive integers W, if (W) = 3W when W is odd and (W) = 1/2W when W is even. Which of the following is equivalent to (9) x (6)?

a (81)
b (54)
c (36)
d (27)
e (18)

I saw this on gmatprep, the answer they gave me is driving me nuts as I cant figure out the explination, maybe I am just looking at something wrong. Has anyone seen this before?

Given:

When W is odd $$(W) = 3W$$
When W is even $$(W) = \frac{1}{2} \times W$$

$$(9) \times (6)=?$$

$$\Rightarrow (9) = 3 \times 9 = 27$$ (as 9 is odd)

$$\Rightarrow (6) = \frac{1}{2} \times 6 = 3$$ (as 6 is even)

$$(9) \times (6)= 27 \times 3 = 81$$

However the answer choices are given in terms of the function as well so we need to see solution of which answer choice matches 81

As you will find only answer choice $$D$$ matches 81

$$\Rightarrow (27) = 27 \times 3 = 81$$ (as 27 is odd)
