As the price of gasoline rises, which makes substituting alcohol distilled from cereal grain attractive, the prices of bread and livestock feed are sure to increase.

(A) which makes substituting alcohol distilled from cereal grain attractive
(B) which makes substituting the distillation of alcohol from cereal grain attractive
(C) which makes distilling alcohol from cereal grain an attractive substitute
(D) making an attractive substitution of alcohol distilled from cereal grain
(E) making alcohol distilled from cereal grain an attractive substitute

my take if E. A, B and C are out because "which" has no clear referent. D sounds awkward to me. and it has idiomatic error. Make X Y. "making an attractive substitution of alcohol distilled from cereal grain" is nonsensical. correct me if i am wrong

IMO Option E.

A, B, C are wrong because which can not modify rises.
D is awkward
E -correct

Picked 'E'. "Which" cannot modify "rises" in the sentence. Choice 'E' is more clearer than choice 'D'

D. Making an attractive substitution of alcohol distilled from cereal gain
E. Making alcohol distilled from cereal grain an attractive substitute

Between substitute and substitution, i am lost. In E, is substitution more correct and appropriate, as "attractive" is adjective that should modify a noun?

Can someone explain, please. Thanks

This sentence is awkward in general.

A, B, and C can be eliminated because "which" can't be "rises" or "the price of gasoline rises"

D is in a passive voice, and awkward

E is the most direct, and correct option. We can rearrange the phrases so it looks like this "The prices are sure to increase making alcohol distilled from cereal grain an attractive substitute as the price of gasoline rises."
