here, as per diagram, the situation forms a right angled triangle, and pytahgoras theorem can be applied to find value of x
x^2 + (x +2) ^ 2 = 10 ^2
x^2 + x^2 + 4x +4 =100
2 x ^2 +4 + 4x = 100
x^2 + 2x - 48 = 0
or, (x+8) (x-6)= 0
if x = 6, x+2 ( because we have to find distance from KAren's house) is 8
correct answer - 8

I drew the same diagram but no algebra but my x was the distance from Karen house. I noticed it had to be a 3-4-5 multiple since the hypotenuse was 10
