wanna
Hi Everyone,
This is my first post here. Request for advice please.
Really torn between Georgetown with no scholarship and Rice with a $80k scholarship. I am an international student with 9+ years of big 4 and risk management work experience in financial industry, looking to enter the top consulting firms (MBBs) or tier 2 firms (EY-P, Accenture, LEK, ATK etc.) and tech companies ( Amazon, HP, Dell, google).
Pros common to both schools:
1. Well recognized brand names across US (parent universities)
2. Good b-school in T20 to 30 range.
Cons common to both schools:
1. limited opportunities in tech industry
2. regional school to their location, McDonough (Mid-Atlantic/North East) and Jones (Southwest)
Aspects attracting me towards McDonough:
1. a tier above Rice maybe, so should provide more access to opportunities
2. Solid pipeline into tier2 consulting firms and provides more probability of entering MBBs post MBA.
3. DC location (a nice city to spend two years, Amazon HQ2 nearby, but maybe not suitable to build family here and less job opportunities compared to Texas, I think? If I’m wrong pls correct me)
4. Very good academics and co-curriculars
5. Better quality peer group
6. The b-school resonates closely with my experience ( I have law background and worked in financial industry) so far , better name than Rice in East Asia in my experience
Aspects attracting me towards Rice:
1. the $80k scholarship obviously, better ROI
2. Huston Location: good economy, low living cost, suitable place to build family here ( but also lose some flexibility?)
3. same opportunities to tier2 consulting firms, almost equal to McDonough
4. Possibility of entering my target firms with minimum investment
5. Near Austin- there are many tech companies there
6. Many classmates have energy background which makes me unique? (or disadvantage?)
The dilemma:
I feel that
Georgetown MBA might be better than that of Rice generally (in terms of career services, co-curriculars, a rising MBA program, alumni network etc.). But Georgetown will definitely cost much more, so joining Georgetown might force me to try recruiting into only the highest paying companies to pay my debt. I am very unsure whether this difference justifies maybe $100,000 difference.
Personally, I am willing to take the debt if it is really worth it. But I am unable to really judge the difference. I accord great importance to the MBA experience and not just to placements. I am really inclined towards Georgetown in spite of the $ difference but if the right and the best thing to do is to join Rice, I will do that. Which is why, I am here seeking guidance from this forum. I have no locational constraint. I plan to stay in US for at least 5 years to build my career and family here, and my partner is Canadian.
Which school do you think provides me with access to
1. Best career opportunities (ie access to top firms BB's, MBB(s) if possible and tier 2 being more likely, also big tech companies)
2. Quality of life/student atmosphere
3. Additionally which provides a better brand currently and moving forward
Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks for the help!
Hi ,
Congratulations on the admits!
Frankly, McDonough and Rice are pretty much in the same league and have a similar brand value (even though Consulting is one of the primary strengths at McDonough); however, the scholarship from Rice looks great and you might want to consider it.
Career opportunities depend immensely on what you make of the MBA program. If you go out there and perform + make sincere efforts to network, you will have plenty of opportunities at both of these schools.
Not sure if you tried negotiating scholarship with McDonough, though!
All the best!
Hi, thank you so much for the reply. Actually, Georgetown gave me some scholarship then. Even though the scholarship is not as much as that from Rice, I'm pretty thankful and satisfied with the scholarship. I'm thinking about how much benefit it will bring to students at McDonough, since Amazon is opening its HQ2 in Arlington near DC. So, will you change your recommendation? or just go for Rice? Thank you again.
