Getting into ISB PGP 2021-22: My GMAT and MBA application journey

I am a commerce graduate from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University. I have over 3 years’ experience in a management consulting firm, where I mostly worked in the financial inclusion domain. After spending 2 years in the firm, I realised that I sorely lack some fundamental business and leadership skills that were hampering my career growth. My manager also told me a few times that I am often misguided and fail to see the larger perspective of things. That is when I realised that I should take a break and work on my skillset.
I started studying for GMAT in January 2020. I had joined a coaching institute as I needed guidance and motivation to study alongside work. I was not very comfortable with online GMAT and could not take it in centre due to lockdown, so, I finally took GMAT in July 2020. At that point of time, I had little knowledge about the selection procedure of international schools and limited time to do the research. I also thought a handholding support throughout the process would be good to have. So, I decided to hire a consultant. I talked to almost all Indian consultants and took their reviews on my profile. Honestly, none of them seemed good enough as they provided too negative or too positive feedback. I was looking for a consultant who could be bluntly tell me things.
I then found out about Management Masters through LinkedIn. They were only 1 year old, so had limited online presence. Unlike others, they did not provide a contact number, which I could just call up on for feedback or their approach. But they did provide all the details on their website. Before signing up with them for my applications, I took their Profile Evaluation package, in which they provided an extremely honest feedback of my profile. They also suggested the schools that I should apply to, which seemed to be in line with the schools I thought I deserved. So, after the profile evaluation report, I took their 5 schools’ application package.
The process was very structured and every step was defined. We spent the first 5 weeks or so in gaining a better understanding of my profile, identifying my strengths and weaknesses, and sharpening my goals. I had much better clarity of my profile after this process. The consultant then helped me in selecting the schools by setting some parameters that were important for me in selecting a school. Similarly, for making resume, the consultant provided me with a format that I really liked and guided me that how to approach every section and which parts I should highlight. I prepared a draft, which the consultant provided comments on and we finalised it over a call. Then came the most important part- essays. The most important part of writing any essay is to understand the essay question. The consultant would help me in breaking down the essay questions into a few simpler sub-parts and make it easier for me to approach it. I would share a draft with the consultants and it would sometimes take only iteration to finalise the essay, but would usually take several iterations to crack it.
I had applied to 8 schools- 2 on my own and 6 with consultant’s help. I received interview invites from ISB, Kellogg and UNC Kenan-Flagler. I took interview package for ISB. The consultant helped me in preparing answers for the interview questions and took 2 mock interviews. For Kellogg and Kenan-Flagler’s interviews, my consultant advised that I prepare myself as I was ready for it and did not require his help. My ISB interview was taken by 3 alumni, Kellogg interview was taken by an alum and KF interview was taken by an AdCom team member. All my interviews went really well. Finally, I received an admit from ISB, and a waitlist from Cornell-Johnson and KF. My waitlist at Cornell is still pending, while I rejected KF’s.
Lastly, I would just like to reiterate that Management Masters has a very well structured process which prepares you to write your own application, instead of the consultant wiring it for you. You also have a handholding support throughout and continuous guidance from consultants who have themselves gone though the process themselves and are from top MBA/MiM programs of the world themselves. Also, I would like to thank GMAT Club for being a great source of information and providing a platform for discussions for MBA aspirants.
