I've been a lurker on this site for a couple years and am looking for some advice.
First, a little bit about my situation. I have been in the workforce for 21 years, but now hold an AVP/Director position in the marketing division at a Midwest based health insurance company. Prior to this position I was a principle at a full service financial services company, where I lead our wealth management team. I sold my stake in the company when I was recruited and hired to my current position.
My boss, our Chief Marketing Officer is retiring, and I was a finalist for the position, but not selected as they went with an external applicant. The feedback I received from our CEO was that I could use some additional technical experience in the marketing space. I've lived the small business/entrepreneur space, where strategy, finance and marketing were on a entire different level. While an MBA was not a requirement, it was preferred for the position I was passed over for. When asked, the feedback I received is that senior leadership would look favorable on the commitment it takes to go through a MBA program.
With all that being said, the EMBA route seems to be the best option for me. I have one kid in college and one 3 years away, so I will be more "mobile" when it comes to employment opportunities, I have built quite a few contacts in my field throughout the country, so a more "national" brand seems like the best decision when picking a program. I have done some research and had conversations with admissions and alumni at a couple of my finalists. I will be traveling back and forth for weekend sessions and probably funding the majority of costs myself, and only considering programs that meet in person once a month. Here is my short list:
Duke Fuqua EMBA- Least expensive, fewest weekends in NC, has a health care concentration that I may be able to sell to my employer
NYU Stern EMBA (DC)- Location (health policy is always in play), my oldest may end up there for grad school.
UCLA Anderson EMBA- UCLA seems to have some health care based electives that jumped out to me
Michigan Ross EMBA- A VP at one of our strategic partners recently graduated and speaks very highly of the program
Does anyone have any insight, or pros/cons for these programs? Should I send in multiple applications? It has been a long time since I completed the accounting program a the University of Minnesota, any tips for an old guy!
Thanks for the help!!
