Given a definition of subset. Not including T, what is the number of the subsets of {S, U, W, T, V}?

n= 4 (without T, there are 4 members in the subset)
= 4c1+4c2+4c3+4c4 =4+6+4+1=15

= 4c1+4c2+4c3+4c4 =4+6+4+1=15

I got 15 using the same method but OA is 16.

Anyone is there any other way to solve these kind of problems??? Pls comment....

I believe null set is also a subset. If we include that it should be 16.

PS: I need to verify it though.

Right. Empty set is subset for all sets. Wonder though if GMAT will expect us to know this. Is this real GMAT quesion?

You would probably have to rewrite the solution then as:

4C0+4C1+4C2+4C3+4C4=16
