Hi GetThisDone,
Since these particular posts are over 2 years old, I'm not sure if there will be any answers to my questions, but here goes.....I'm curious about the "context" of this question - where did it come from? If this was a GMAT PS question, then there would be 5 answer choices to choose from, so we might be able to TEST THE ANSWERS or potentially use them to our advantage so that we could save some time (and avoid some of the calculations). If this equation is part of a larger prompt, then what are the other details, the question and answer choices of that larger prompt?
Every Quant question on Test Day has a "math approach" to it, but rarely is that approach the ONLY approach. Here, we're forced to do math because the question is incomplete (and as you've come to realize, if you make a mistake, then you might find yourself "stuck" or with one of the incorrect answers). Training to develop the proper "math" skills AND the proper tactical skills will help you to maximize your performance on Test Day.
