Global market researchers have claimed that the recent increase in gasoline prices so that they were the highest price in five years foreshadows little relief from the ongoing petroleum crisis.

a) so that they were the highest price in five years (Wrong usage of so that in the sentence)
b) so that they were the highest five-year price (Same as A)
c) to what should be the highest price in five years (Wrong comparison of increase in price level)
d) to a five-year high level (Same as C)
e) to the highest price in five years (Correct)

Kudos please if you like my explanation!

A and be should be discarded, right off the bat, as ‘so that’ is not the right phrase to use. C and D do not compare the price rise properly.

E is the right option
