Hi,
I wrote my GMAT on 17th October and got 590(Q47 and V24). Quants score is highest of all my practice test. . In verbal, I use to range from 20-31 and was consistent at 28 level. I have planned to retake but I am not sure how far I can improve in verbal in one month. I studied for around 2.5 months.
Also I gave GMAT in May 2012 and got 420 with one week preparation. I didn't know what is GMAT and wanted to give a shot before pattern change. Then gave another shot in November 2012 but cancelled the score because I did very poor in Verbal and ran out of time.
Materials used:
OG 13
E-gmat
Powerscore CR
CAT 1: 450 (Q30, V19)
CAT 2: 590 (Q40, V31)
CAT 3: 490 (Q30, V28)
CAT 4: 490 (Q38, V20)
CAT 5: 560 (Q39, V28)
CAT 6: 570 (Q39, V29)
Please note, I need to apply in R2 and I can't prolong it further. I am desperate to go now. It's now or never situation for me. Frankly I was aiming for 700 level when I started with preparation but now I at 590 level. I am not satisfied with this goal so want to give another shot before I conclude 590 as a final score. Currently in a dilemma of what if I am unable to cross 590 level on my next attempt. I am preparing for TOEFL and giving it in another few weeks.
Following are my queries
1. What are the chances of me getting with 590 score into a decent uni in US, UK, Australia or Europe. I am yet to check the schools.
Indian Male. Age-27
Degree: B.E Computer Science (Sri Venkateswara College, Chennai) - 77%
Work Experience:
6 months Internship at Ramco Systems (ERP).
4.5 years at Cognizant Technology solutions(2 promotions).
Currently working for SOFCON, non-governmental organisation on Nature conservation.
I have won lot of awards and appreciation in my tenure in Cognizant. I was involved in social activities via Cognizant educating children in Govt schools and teaching them on daily basis for few hours. Also this project won the best award for that year.
Also I have done lot of websites out of personal interest and one website for SOFCON. Currently working on android application to create awareness about Nature conservation.
Post Mba goal: To work for few years and then start my own company.
2. Please tell me whether the following will work.
With the current score, I have planned to apply to some decent uni and in parallel prepare for retake. If the retake score is higher than 590, I can use it and if it's not, I will cancel the score.

That's a decent strategy to apply and retake at the same time. You can cancel if you don't reach your target.
That said, we recommend either applying or studying -- doing both at the same time can confuse your head. Best to focus.

Thank you for sharing your information. It seems that you have a strong quant but weak verbal score. That is very usual for applicants with a computer or tech. background.
I would recommend to focus on the verbal test part and retake the GMAT. It is def. doable to improve your verbal score (while not forgetting about your quant score at the same time) to a higher level. There are many strategies you can use to almost instantly avoid the most common mistakes. This alone will have a great impact but if you learn all verbal concepts you will improve even more.
