Hello lchoc ..... welcome to the community. Congratulations on such an amazing score.
Thanks a bunch for the great write-up on Quants. It would be great if you can put forward some of your thoughts for Verbal as well ( the community would love to hear about that from one who scored V40 & V42 within 2 weeks time)

All the best for the next phases.

Hi @u1983,

Thanks for your message. As I studied between my tests using the EMPOWER course, I mainly used their resources in order to improve my verbal score. If you have access to the course I strongly recommend going through Max's videos and doing all the quizzes from the OG as well as making sure to watch his video explanations. His tips on how to identify wrong answer types were extremely helpful for me and helped me narrow down answers to two choices on certain high level questions.

However, if you don't have access to the course and want to improve your Verbal score quickly here are two things I would recommend:

1. Focus on SC. SC is probably the most straightforward way to pick up points on the gmat since the rules repeat themselves and they can be found on most gmat forums. I reviewed the known idioms on the gmat a bunch of times before my second test which enabled me to spot them quickly and eliminate at least 3 choices on the SC questions involving idioms. I also reviewed the basic gmat grammar rules. The OG is a great place to practice SC although I recommend looking at gmatclub threads for explanations and strategic approach to questions because the OG explanations are not very helpful.

2. Practice being comfortable with reading slowly. On my first test, I rushed through the RC passages mainly because I felt like I did not have much time to waste reading and I should focus on answering the questions. However that was a bad choice: not reading the passage carefully made me waste more time since I kept on re-reading sentences to answer the questions. After the test I practiced RC questions by making sure I was reading the passage slowly enough, taking notes after each paragraph, and feeling connected to its meaning. Sometimes I would even stop in the middle of reading a passage and think to myself "do I agree with this or not". It may seem stupid but it really helped me understand the passage and feel connected to its context. In the end, using this technique made a huge impact on my RC performance. By understanding the text I was able to predict the answers to the questions before looking at them (and then picking the one that matched my prediction), and I did not waste time re-reading parts of the passage.

Just by practicing these two techniques I think it is possible to pick up a lot of points on the verbal section. However, if you have access to EMPOWER course, I strongly recommend it.

Good luck!

Nice effort. So it took you 3.5 months from start to finish by using those two courses. How long do you think it would've taken you to get a 720 with self-study?

Hi philipssonicare, I uploaded my verified score for the last exam I took. I cancelled my first score of 660 after receiving my second score so you'll just have to take my word for it :)

Yes, it took me overall around 3.5 months. Keep in mind I was also working and so did not spend full days studying until the last few weeks before my first exam. I did not take time off of work between my two exams.

To answer your question: If I had not used the Kaplan course I think I could have still reached the 660 since it was mainly about reviewing concepts and the general format of the GMAT which I could have gotten with the OG and GMATClub posts. I may even have wasted less time doing unnecessary practice on specific concepts like combinations and permutations and statistics because the course included it (and these questions are literally worthless on the GMAT).
However without the empower techniques I think it would have taken me a much longer time to reach my 720. What really made the difference was using the specific tactics on the questions, and learning which questions to skip, how to identify wrong answers etc... this is insider knowledge of the GMAT that was invaluable and unfortunately I was not able to find anywhere else. That is why I strongly recommend the course to anyone who is looking to get a high score quickly. Without the course it is, of course, totally possible, but personally it would have taken me a lot of trial and error and psychological determination to change my approach to the questions.

Hope this helps :)

Congrats and thanks for writing this! I used points from using the forums to receive a free week of the GMATClub Tests and was extremely disappointed in my scores. I'm glad to hear that they're just harder!

I'm retaking the GMAT in a few days, so I'm hoping doing some difficult problems this week will help me a lot. I never thought to experiment to see what section order would be best for me. I've just always done Quant first as I want to be as fresh as possible for it. No time to play with it now, so I'll just continue as is. Hopefully I won't have to try a third time, but if I do, I'll definitely try that!

Thanks again for writing this!
