OzMBA,

This is a friendly board, let's keep it that way. A simple, "I'm skeptical" would be fine as opposed to lambasting the poster who mentioned Stanford.

In response to the original post, a 690 is a good score. For an Indian Engineer however, you will need to have top-notch essays, and good ECs I think to be competitive in the Top 5 or so. But if you are shooting for Top 20, I think you are certainly within range.

I understand it is difficult to come to terms with anything that hits hard the believes that we have closely nourished for long...but there are many paths to reach the admission goal than the ones we know of and believe in..

Now how do I know the person? Because we worked in the same office for 1.5 years ( so it's not like my friend told me such and such..)

But I think the confusion generated when I told "the person was not outstanding". That does not mean just a regular candidate. The person was non-engineer and had top of the line education in India. ( excellent candidadte but not outstanding) I will stop here because any more detail will make it easy to identify the candidate through various social/ professional networking sites.

Peace :)

Nothing like that! The reality is "For any Indian Male, the competition is tough irrelevant of any top 15/20 school..

what i find irritating is the profile requests and the associated advice people get

I got 7XX score, went to IIT, worked as a code coolie - can i get into Harvard and instead of telling him the reality what one often does is, I know my friend -bla bla went to HSW - u can give a shot!

But the reality is way different and any indian Male aspiring for HSW -needs to be
Quote:
outstanding
in all aspects

Any one who thinks that, if I write Great Essays, i would have a shot is stupdity..Please assess your self and have realistic expectations....

I hope I am not violating any copyrights here. Have removed any information that could give out the person. This is a profile of an HBS admit from couple of years ago.

Quote:
GMAT Score: 650 (quant-48, verbal-31)

Details : Female, 25yrs, Indian

Work Ex- 2 yrs and 3 months.
selected from campus by NGO in India for its national fellowship program under which had the opportunity to rotate around the whole organization (all its units - health, education, emergency response, HR, finance, gender, governance etc) for one year. Absorbed into NGO's microfinance program in India. Received two promotions in 1 year. Job profile required to do heavy networking, manage and monitor a team of field workers of NGOs to transform them into microfinance institutions and do a bit of consultancy kind of work. All this includes ingredients of both livelihoods and microfinance.
Now planning to switch over to some bank which may be looking at microfinance as a business proposition, so as to gain an understanding of how FFIs see things.

Want to do an MBA from a good school to get corporate exposure, professional growth, feel of competitive environ and high quality professionals and also for the rigor involved. Feel that it would help me gain an entry into an area like investment banking which is becoming so relevant to the microfinance context today as an absolutely huge demand for credit from the microfinance clients unfolds itself. I believe that exposure to that side of the market will help me get into place where the latest of the microfin is happening and contribute meaningfully to the sector.

Education: 3 yr BA degree with English, Political Science as the main subjects and Economics as the third subject. Among the very few in the humanities department to get a 64%. Completed a 2 yr Post Graduate Diploma in a Management program from a premier sectoral management institution in the country. Was a merit holder with a 3.67 CGPA (on a scale of 4.33).

Other stuff: reading, traveling and investing time in networking. Cadet with the National Cadet Corps Naval wing during undergrad years and passed from the naval unit with a 'C' certificate and a high grade. Volunteered as an assistant editor in an environ mag during the same time apart from some other short term work stints (interior designing and sales). Was the editor of the institute's alumni newsletter for two years and fulfilled my commitment of regular production of the newsletter during this period. Was also a member of the core editorial committee of NGO employer's inhouse mag for a year.
