Hello
In the second attempt of my gmat, I attained the score stated above. My first attempt was 680(v34,q50). I am quite saddened by the fact that my Q score reduced. I am planning to take gmat for the third time but I am seeking some answers before I go for it.
My background : I am an engineer with an MS degree, working in CA and want to switch my career track. I am taking online Business related courses to support my application and to gain some preliminary knowledge of the field.
1. I am planning to apply to top 10 Bschools and I am not sure what score I should be comfortable with. I want to achieve 750 with q50/51 but I would like to know how much does gmat really count, given that I do not have significant knowledge or experience of the business domain in general.
2. Even if I achieve 730+ score, what else should I focus on to make equip myself with necessary skills?
Years of exp : 4yrs in tech
Have held a few leadership roles in the past and working towards gaining more leadership experience before I apply.
Have led teams for volunteering
have taken a couple business related one off courses
Any other suggestions to make my profile stronger are welcome. I am currently trying to gain as much knowledge and develop as many skills as possible to become the right candidate for the top 10 Bschools.
Thanks !
Hi pathomkar,
We think you are on the right path, with respect to improving the GMAT score. A higher score always helps. While 700 will help you get into a good B-school, the top 10 B-schools would require a much higher GMAT, especially since you belong to the super-competitive engineering pool.
Having said that, GMAT is just one of the parameters. A good B-school also looks for display of signs of leaderships, teamwork and professional maturity that show that you are ready for an MBA. As a candidate from a technology background, you should focus on identifying where you have and potentially can make a quantifiable and measurable impact to business, that will improve your candidature. Instances of teamwork, innovation, ethics are few areas to begin with. Similarly with extracurriculars, have you been able to make an impact with your volunteering?
B-schools look for well-rounded applicants. While you continue to work on your GMAT, we think it is extremely important to identify the B-schools that would best suit your profile. Why don't you try our free B-school selector tool here:
