Hi Yzreel,

The Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores that each GMATer receives in the Official Score Report are 'rounded' numbers (for convenience); the ACTUAL Scaled Scores are almost never integers though - and it's those actual results that are used to calculate the Overall GMAT Score (out of 800). Since you scored a Q48 on your 2nd Official GMAT, I assume that you know the 'rules of rounding'; in the context of the numbers you've listed though, here's how we can account for your Official results:

A Q48 could actually be any result from a Q47.5 - Q48.4, and....
A Q41 could actually be any result from a V40.5 - V41.4

Since you received a 720, it's likely that one (or both) of your Scaled Scores were rounded-up to Q48/V41.

We last discussed your studies late last year. Did you end up applying to Schools in January as planned (and if so, then what were the results?)?

Hi Rich! Thank you so much for the reply.
I see, I had just realized that your Quant and Verbal scores are rounded scores, thanks for explaining!

No, I decided against applying to schools in Jan due to a recent promotion at work. I am hoping to have a stronger application by R1 this year, and fingers crossed will be good enough for one of the M7s :)
Very pleased that you remember me though, much appreciated!

Hi Yzreel.

You GMAT total score is based on your performance on the test rather than on your section scores, which can represent a range of performances.

In other words, a range of performances can result in Q48 V41 or Q49 V42.

So, a Q49 V42 performance will also be a 750 performance only if that Q49 V42 performance is a strong Q49 V42 performance. Otherwise, you may score 740, or even 730 with Q49 V42.

Thus, as you might imagine, increasing your score by 30 more points will take a commensurate improvement in performance. You'll need a 30-point increase type of improvement in performance, which is probably more than a "one notch better in Q and V" improvement.

For some tips on how to score 750+ on the GMAT, see this post.

How to Score 750+ on the GMAT

Hi Marty!
I see, thank you for explaining. That means I'd probably need to work a bit harder for the 750+ score, fingers crossed!
Honestly given my demography 720 is really quite good, but thanks for the link! I've been using TTP and honestly it's such a valuable resource.
