Hi Aayuva,

First off, a 740/Q49 is already an outstanding Score, so you can comfortably apply to any Business Schools that interest you. As such, a retest is not necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to act on that advice, the better).

There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

There's certainly no harm in retaking the GMAT, but to find the missing points that you are looking for, you will have to nit-pick your prior CAT/mock performances in more detail. What types of Quant questions were you getting wrong - and more importantly, WHY were you getting them wrong? Were you doing work 'in your head' and making silly mistakes? Were you using approaches that took too long? etc. One of the interesting aspects of the GMAT is the most questions are written so that they can approached in more than one way - meaning that "your way" of approaching the Quant section might actually be leaving you open to making certain types of mistakes (and ending up with a Q49 instead of a Q51).

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Yesterday i took my first GMAT attempt and got 740 q49 v 41. In my official practice tests I had got scores up to 760 and 770 and an average score of 750 + . I want to to improve my quant score by working on my weak areas . Can i do it in 15 days ? Any suggestions would be valuable.

esr percentiles :
ps - 85th
ds -69th

arithmetic - 96th
algebra/geometry - 63rd

Helped a person go from a V41 to a V45 in about 10 days. They ended up with a 760 (Q49 V45). That being said, I had another student get a 760 with a Q49 V44, so it's possible for that combo to get you to your target too. In both cases, a significant part of the learning was on solving approach. At a V41 level, it's probably fair to say a person already has strong fundamentals on Verbal. Stuff such as Sub/Verb agreement should be quite familiar to you, for example. A quick suggestion would be to find study buddy who has strong verbal skills. You could teach them Quant in return. Because your time is limited, you may want to be specific about the study topics. "I'll teach you inequalities if you show me how you do RC", for example.

thanks. one thing that hurt me was much more time spent in incorrect questions ,
1. this time i had quant first . should i change the section sequence the next time ?
If quant is relatively easy for you, it may work better to do verbal first. Each test taker has a better section order. What's best for others may not be best for you. For me, verbal is relatively easy, so I always do quant, which I find more challenging, first to be as fresh as possible for quant.

2. what study material and tests should i refer to as i have already exhausted the official qs and mocks ? will retaking gmatprep official mocks 3-6 help or should i try something else ?
Since the question banks for official tests 3 to 6 are not large, it wouldn't be that helpful to retake those tests since you'd see many repeated questions. It would be better to take some third-party practice tests, some of which are listed here. https://gmatclub.com/forum/all-gmat-pra ... 28289.html

Hi Aayuva

740 is a great score. Congratulations! However, if you want to go for a retake let me share my insights.

In case of Quant, you should consider spending more time on analysing the solutions of the questions from the topics in which you are weak. By analysing I mean, go through each step of the solution, identify the exact step at which you made the mistake, compare your approach with the right one and then learn the right approach. This should help.

If you are struggling with some specific topics, you may share the same for better understanding and I can help you out with your worries.
