Nice work on the test, and thanks for the debrief. I just purchased the same books you did (MGMAT, OG Verbal and Quant). Waiting for them to arrive, and targeting a summer 2012 test date.

Wow!
That's a nice score! Congratulations!

I am tussling with Verbal. Need to improve the verbal score by almost 10 points. I'm also thinking to take up some prep sessions, e-gmat looks as a good option. Thanks for your suggestions, Shantanu.

You are welcome, Nilay!

I think e-GMAT is a cost-effective option to improve verbals by applying smart stratagies - especially for Indians like us - traditionally quant heavy...:)

All the best!

Thanks a lot Santanu, that was enlightening.

What all materials did you use for Maths?
Would you suggest maths by Jeff Sackman?

You are welcome, Mandeep.

I have no idea about the maths book by Jeff Sackman as I have not used it.

I would suggest:

For building your base: All Manhattan GMAT maths materials and the GMATClub Online Free Maths Book

For taking tests and developing your quants test taking skills:

Thw two GMATPrep practice tests (they are pure golddust) - once done, pls reistall and take both tests again given the question bank is quite exhaustive

I personally did not like the MGMAT quant sections though they are good for practice because they are definitely tougher than the actual test and also, inflate the scores to a degree.

Pls go through the GMATClub Diagnostic test at least twice.

I liked the PlatinumGMAT online free GMAT practice test and the Quants section in it

Also liked the Knewton, Veritas and Kaplan free tests

You should also go through the 2 documents published by Bunuel (one for DS, the other for PS) - specifically, the DS questionnaire was very helpful for me.

For advanced practice, others here have recommended GMATClub Maths tests, though I haven't used them.

Please bear in mind that: Reviewing each question that you did not understand, understanding it and solving it again is absolutely essential, whichever book you follow.

Hi Shantu
Could you please state what was your accuracy in RC CR and SC (In which material)?

i am scoring 80-90 % correct in CR (OG 11)
SC (80% in OG , 70 % in sc grail)
RC (3 out of 4 in each passage OG11)

my first mock test gave me 590 . I got disappointed due to my bad verbal score.
Now i am planning to give mock again before that i want to gather some courage. :)
I don't know how good is my accuracy now.

Going by the data you have given, your overall verbal accuracy should be around 75-77% now, which implies roughly that you should get around 10 out of 41 questions wrong in Verbal - indicating an approx verbal score range of 38-39. My accuracy was on similar lines, in the 75-80% range, but sometimes, lower.

Assuming a 50 in quants, that should imply a score of 720-730.

Of course, these are rough estimates and your scores will move up as you take more practice tests.

If you maintain this strike rate, you should expect to see a 690-710 score, I think, which should be a big improvement.

Don't remember breakups, but should be around 6-8 mistakes overall I guess - should be an accuracy of 80-85%.

Yes, that's right.

However, I would urge you to take a practice test as a learning experience and learn from the mistakes rather than treat it as a make-or-break emotional rollercoaster. That would put additional pressure on you and be detrimental to your score even.

Hasan

Firstly, to know where you stand, you should take a GMATPrep practice test - this would tell you where you are currently.

Secondly, you should know what your targeted score is - will you be satisfied with a 600 or do you want a 700?

If you are totally new to GMAT preparation, only 1 month could be a touch short, I think.

As regards a starting point and guideline to your preps, pls have a look at this link:

everything-you-need-to-prepare-for-the-gmat-revised-77983.html

This thread has links to free tests, best books, GMAT scores etc - would be a good starting point.
