Hey all,
Just wanted to say that I retook the GMAT yesterday and got a score 200 points greater than the previous one, last month.Thankfully, the new score is above the minimum I needed (and was aiming for). I got a 600, and my CATS where these: 620, 620, 640, 650 (all veritas). The 600 I got yesterday at the real GMAT is also around the last CAT I took last month (620).
Both scores, math and verbal, are very different than the previous ones.
My math score was still abut 20% lower than the score I was receiving in the CATs I did this past month (I am usually around 55-60% and I got around 40%). This was about 30% higher compared to the math percentile I saw in the previous real gmat attempt I took, even though it was still low. This time though I felt that math was quite challenging and for sure I didn't manage my timing well. I was left with 10 questions in the end and with very little time in my hands. I think I responded to most of these last 10 almost randomly.
I have noticed that sometimes this happens to me in the math part. For sure, I am lacking in some conepts, but I also have the tendency to not be able to skip questions... What helps me is to make a conscious decision when I begin the test, sth like a personal contract, like "when a question seems too tough and the solution is not clear in my mind, I will spend at most 1' on it". When I do this, I am better able to skip questions and score higher because I have more time for the other questions. And this is helpful, because there are times when I will get stuck in a question for 5', pushing myself to solve it, and end up getting it wrong and wasting those 5'. I know I did it a few times yesterday, in the real test.
My verbal score was the biggest difference, and for sure this is not sth you can achieve within a month (and I didn't practice verbal at all, I only did a couple of passages and the CATs). I was around the 26th percentile last month when I took the real gmat, and scored at the 90th percentile this time on the real gmat (which is about the same as the CATs I have been doing, both this and the previous time). All of my mistakes are due to the passages (I get 50% wrong each time and sometimes an even higher % of wrong asnwers for passages), as I make virtually no mistakes in sentence correction or critical reasoning (when I do make mistakes they are no more than 2 in CR and 1 in sentence correction or the opposite).
Concerning my mistakes in passages, they happen for 3 main reasons:
1) I have a serious conentration problem when it comes to texts. I am a very slow reader, even in my own language. Even though I think I am a good writer (I score at the 90th percentile in the argument part of the GMAT), I cannot coprehend when I read quickly. It happens, but I need to be familiar with the topic or it must be a non-technical topic. Or I am in the mood...
2) When it comes to science passages (eg biology, space) or technical passages (eg computers) I understand less than half of what is happening in the passage! With all of the terminology, I have to spend 5' in each question before I realize what is happening.
3) Because I have this concentration issue, I spend more time than what I should to take notes. And funny thing, I never go through my notes afterwards.. It is only for me to remain engaged in the text. I am sure I would do much better in the paper version for this part..

Anyway, I wanted to share this, as this whole experience created some questions for me. I hope that it will at least be helpful for other test takers.
