Hi Daksh730.

It sounds as if you lost focus during the verbal section. So, maybe, had you stayed on task, you would have scored much higher. What do you think?

Also, perhaps, even though you felt OK in RC during your prep, you should work on RC some so that you have clear strategies for handling RC passages and questions that you can rely on when you're taking the test.

Hi Marty,
Thanks for your reply
Yes, I did lose focus on the Verbal section and I think I would have scored in the 37~39 range had I not. But in retrospect losing focus is not entirely in one's control and is something that can happen, so you are correct in suggesting that I need to practice more on the Verbal section, including learning to overcome loss of focus and other such phy. factors that get into the mix.

[quote="EMPOWERgmatRichC"]Hi Daksh730,

I'm sorry to hear that your recent Official Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. The fact that this has now happened twice implies that there are some specific variables that we need to define before you retake the GMAT. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) Over the last 3 months, how many hours did you typically study each week?
2) During that time, did you take any other CATs/mocks besides the 3 Official ones that you retook?

Goals:
3) What is your overall goal score?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Since you took your Official GMAT at a Test Center, then you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Hi Rich,
Thanks for your time. I might not be able to attach a copy of my ESR, since I am not yet eligible to do so according to GC rules. Will be happy to PM you one.
Studies:
1) Over the last 3 months, how many hours did you typically study each week?
I typically studied 1.5-2 hours each day.
2) During that time, did you take any other CATs/mocks besides the 3 Official ones that you retook?
No, the only mock tests that I took were the Official ones.
Goals:
3) What is your overall goal score?
My goal is 730+ (hence the user name :D )
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?
I am planning R1 next year and hope that I will have a decent score to present.
Target Schools would be:
UCJBS- Judge
Warwick- WBS
ISB- Indian School of Business
IIM-A- Executive MBA

Yes, practicing verbal more will help, and one thing I did when preparing was do some of my practice late at night when I was pretty tired to train to think clearly even when tired. That approach might help you as well.

Hi Daksh730,

To start, studying for the GMAT now - far in advance of next year's Round 1 deadlines - is a smart choice. Having the opportunity to focus on the GMAT (without needing to also consider the various other aspects of the Application) should help you to improve in a more efficient way.

Before you can include attachments with your posts/PMs, you need to have at least 5 posts in the forums (right now, you have 3 posts). If you would rather not go through those extra steps at this point, then you can feel free to email your ESR directly to me (at [email protected]).

Hi Experts/Members,
Long time lurker here.
This is my first post on GMAT Club. Sorry for the long one
First of all huge respect for all the members who have contributed to this amazing community. A lot of guys, like me, out there look up to you guys for advise without you all knowing so.
Now, I just came out of my third attempt at the GMAT and to say that I am disappointed would be an understatement.
My first attempt was in the year 2016, when I was in my final year of undergrad. I managed to score a decent 690(Q47/V38).
Years passed and I focused on my job and put my plans for an MBA on hold, that was until last year. I figured that I have to retake the GMAT and started preparing for it in December-2020.
The story of the 2nd attempt:
I used the veritas prep videos and guides for foundational knowledge for both Verbal and Quant, supplemented with some practice from OG and the free GMAT Club tests for Quant. I attempted 4 official mock exams, including Official mocks 3 & 4.
GMAT Prep Mock 1(14,March,2021)- 710(Q49/V38)
GMAT Prep Mock 2(4,April,2021)- 730(Q49/V41)
GMAT Prep Mock 3(18,April,2021)- 730(Q48/V41)
GMAT Prep Mock 4(27,June,2021)- 680(Q45/V38)- My prep got derailed for 2 months as I first came down with Covid in the first week of May-2021 and then got engaged in an important project that totally throwed me off the rails till mid June-2021.

Official GMAT Online(6,July,2021)- 640(Q48,V29) I thought my verbal score could be a symptom of long covid as I was completely zoned out for most of the section.

Moving on:
I signed up for the TTP course and built my SC fundamentals, which I figured were the weakest link in my Verbal prep.
I also practiced a fair bit of Quant so that I can maintain the Q48-49.
For CR I went through the Manhattan GMAT CR Guide and practiced using the OG 2016, which I owned thanks to my first encounter with the GMAT.
For RC I didn’t use any resource as I was doing fairly well on OG 2016 passages and during my prep for the second attempt I didn’t face much challenge on the RC.
Watched the entire GMAT Ninja series on Youtube and did fairly well on the questions and was able to relate to the explanations by Charles.

Retook 3 official GMAT prep mocks:
GMAT Prep Mock 1(20,Nov,2021)- 700(Q47/V39)
GMAT Prep Mock 4(27,Nov,2021)- 770(Q50/V44)- Full disclosure: I was familiar with some of the questions prior to taking the test.
GMAT Prep Mock 3(05,Dec,2021)- 720(Q49/V38)- breezed through the Q section with ~20 minutes to spare, ran short on time for V and had to rush through the last 8 questions in 5 minutes, got 4 incorrect as a result.
Time for the 3rd attempt, this time I decided to go for a test center appointment.
The result *drum roll* the glorious 640! (Q48/V32) I cancelled my score in disappointment and walked away.
Some reflections on my nerves during the exam:
I started with verbal first and was able to confidently answer the first two questions, both SC, correctly. Question no.3 RC, I don’t know why but I zoned out again and was not able to comprehend the passage. I remember being distracted by the loud thumping on the keyboard by the gentleman sitting next to me, probably taking the GMAT in AWA first order, he added to the ambiance the squeaking sound of his chair by rocking it back and forth. I looked at the clock and completely lost the track of the passage and had to guess 2 RC questions and move on. Felt a little calm after inserting the noise isolating earplugs.
Quant section felt a little challenging than on the Mocks but I managed to finish it on time with some confidence that I would have done enough to get a Q47-48. I wasn’t so sure about the verbal but even to my surprise I did so poorly AGAIN!
So finally I get to my question:
Experts, where do I go from here?
Please feel free to ask further questions that will help you assess my situation.
Thank you for being patient and making it to the end of the post.

Daksh,

You need to put in effort in both Quant and Verbal. Q48 and V32 both are around 65 - 70 percentile. Consider this that average Quant score is 40 and average verbal score is 27. Try to bring both of them up to 80 percentile at least.

Check your ESR to figure out your weaknesses. This is especially useful in a case like yours in which the practice tests do not highlight many weaknesses.
Note that this happens often with people who have been preparing for a long time. They get familiar with all practice test questions (whether you actually recall the question and answer during the test, doesn't matter). Familiarity leads to better results during the practice but since questions are applied differently in actual GMAT, the official scores may not reflect practice scores.

Once you pinpoint your weak areas, work specifically on those to ensure clear fundamentals.

Have you considered the GRE instead of the GMAT?
For many or most test takers, GRE scores are in the same percentile range as GMAT scores.
But there certainly are some who do much better in the GRE.
At least find out whether you're one of them.

(One reason I'm suggesting this is that you may have had an overdose of the GMAT already! Something different will be nice.)

Hi Daksh730,

Sorry to hear about your experience of GMAT Test Day. I can understand the feeling of getting 700+ scores on GMAT prep official mocks and not being able to reflect the same in the actual test. However, don’t lose heart. As long as you are ready to put in efforts and put right what went wrong, there is a ray of hope. Let me share my insights with you.

For scoring 700 and above, you need to make sure you don’t get the easy & medium questions wrong as GMAT test is adaptive in nature. For that, being conceptually clear on all topics is really vital. Not only this, you have to be good with application of concepts also, because GMAT is a test of application of concepts. But, before application, you need to understand the motive behind the questions being asked. Once you understand that, the process of learning becomes a lot simpler and easier. If your concepts are clear and you use the right methods and strategies to solve questions, you will be able to smartly avoid the traps set by the test makers.

Looking at your Quant score, it appears that you are good with concepts but you have to work a little more on the application of concepts while solving the Quant Questions. You should consider spending more time on analysing the solutions of the questions from the topics in which you are weak. By analysing I mean, go through each step of the solution, identify the exact step at which you made the mistake, compare your approach with the right one and then learn the right approach. This should help.

However, you definitely have consistency issues in Verbal. There are wildHav swings in your Verbal scores which implies that you haven’t followed a very structured approach. One possible reason could be that you’re following too many sources of information and have now confused yourself. I would suggest you to only focus and study from one source, whatever it may be.

Having said that, I would like to have a one-on-one conversation with you to evaluate this better. You can schedule a call with me using the link given below for a detailed discussion around the same along with ESR analysis. This way we can go through your exact pain points and come up with a revised strategy for you.

Hey,
Thanks for your response. Yes, I contemplated taking the GRE over the GMAT and researched about the exam as well. From my assessment, GRE is more oriented towards testing vocabulary than reasoning. (Looks like I am stating the obvious) I feel that I am better suited for a test of reasoning than memory. I could be biased as I am more familiar with the GMAT than the GRE and I want to give the GMAT a final(or two) attempts before thinking of abandoning the idea all together. I did GMAT detox myself for the past couple of weeks understanding that I might have been overdosed with information.
Let's see how the next couple of months turn out to be.

Hello,
Thank you for the detailed response. I am sorry I was away for a couple of weeks so couldn't post anything on the forum. I will be attaching my ESR shortly on the forum and register through the link that you have added. I look forward to speaking with you.

Hi Daksh,

Let's connect tomorrow at the scheduled time for a fruitful discussion :)
