Took the GMAT on 11/7 after 2.5 months of studying with Kaplan.
BAM! 640
I am actually not depressed at this point because maybe that is where I am and top schools are not for me.

My practice scores have ranged from 710 to 620, with Q ranging from 43 to 51 and V ranging from 30 to 41.
I had a 8am appointment. The night before I simply went through all my cliff notes and the kaplan pocket guide. I went to sleep at 10p and woke up at 530a. I did 5 math problems before I left for the test center (I was not going to check my answers, but one problem stumped me so I checked the answer but I did get all 5 correct).
I did my 2 AWA and I felt I did okay (since they don't really count). Took my break and came back for Quant. Quant started great. In fact question 3 was the same (90% similar) question I saw on GMATPREP 2 days (which I got wrong) so I knew I got that one right. Everything was going great until about question 8 and it got HARD fast. I was really confident at that time and probably spend a little too much time on 8, 9, 10 to get them absolutely right. By Q25 I was at 35 minute left and I started to panic little. I made a few guesses and just got the last question in before time expired. I knew I did not do as well as on the CATS to get Q50 but I did not think I bombed it.
Took the second break and had a chocolate bar. Started verbal. The verbal questions seem easier than the Kapaln ones (especially the RC). I understood all 4 RC passages and was fairly confident in my answers. The last RC passage I rushed a little due to time but it was a short passage. I finished Q41 with 1:30 on the clock. Submit

I think because I am 70 points lower than one of my practice CATS, this might be a case where a retake is a good idea?
BUT I have to report a score to 2 schools I already applied to. Which is better? In fact my unofficial over ranking is only 75% versus 76% in march.
Advise please....
I registered right away to take it again on 12/12. It will be my FINAL attempt. Any advice for a 4 weeks study plan?
- I figure I am going to get anywhere from Q46 to Q50 so I think it is best to focus on verbal because it seems like a high verbal score does a lot more to the overall socre.
- Not even looking to get 700+ at this point. Just 680 so the top schools know I am not incompetent
I think the Kaplan course was good but maybe it did not work for me. What can I do in four weeks to make a 40-50 points improvement? (focusing primarily on RC, SC, and CR).

hey so sorry to learn that you could not get to where you wanted to. It's really disheartening to see that in got better scores in prep and similar perfornace did not result on the test-day.
In my humble opinion, improving Quants is relatively easier than verbal, If I were you, i would do the following:
1.focus on Quants, especially number properties. and then DS (related to NP)
2.Focus more on RC.
3.Try to bring down your time per Q on SC to 1 min.
then take tests.

I think many test takers are jealous about your score.
Regarding that a 640 is in the 78th percentile, I am sure 78% of the test takers are :D
But, as you scored this before in the real test and did score higher in the practice tests, I would seriously think about taking the test again just to be sure it really represents your skills. However, I would not study much, because it seems your scores up and down does not mean that you know "more" or "less". Honestly, if you did score a 50 in practice tests, is because you KNOW math. So just study V and Q as a reminder, not to actually LEARN...
