Ugh. Sorry. I have seen people talk about the challenging experience and running into hard questions lately. Not sure why this is happening.

How were your practice scores?

I was hoping to take an opinion about the Focus edition and will it be a wise choice to appear for it in the next 15 days. If yes, what all should I keep in my mind to prepare a strategy for my one final attempt before I submit my R2 applications.
Hi Av919,

You should get the ESR if you really want to check how tough your exam was. You could also reach out to your target programs and check whether you can send them another GMAT score after a retake.

I was scoring well above 720, plus my previous score was 680 and I knew I had messed up just because of some timing issues. I overcame the same by giving multiple mocks before this attempt.

I already cancelled the score, but to be honest really don't feel like spending money on an attempt which I know does not reflect my true capability.

I'm sorry to hear about your test experience.

Did you take all 6 official practice tests? If so what were your scores on those tests?

Before deciding whether you should retake the GMAT classic edition, you might want to try taking one of the free focus edition practice tests to see if that might be a better option for you.

Hi Brent, I did take the first 2 practice tests and scored above 700 on those. Plus, I solved all GMAT Prep questions, Manhattan and Veritas question banks for CR and SC.

Also, I intend on taking the Focus Edition mock soon, any suggestions on what to brush up on before appearing for the same?

Since you've already scored 700+ on official questions, and since you've scored 7/8 in IR, you can probably head straight to the Focus practice test to see how you fare.

But given that Verbal section does not contain SC which used to save me some precious time for the RCs, how should I strategise my time management for the same?

The timing strategy for Focus verbal is pretty much the same as the strategy you've been using for the Classic edition of the GMAT.
In the classic edition, you have 1:48 per question, and with the Focus edition, you have 1:57 per question.
Since it typically takes less time to answer SC Q's, the additional time you have for Focus verbal Qs should make for a comparable experience.
See how you do on a practice test.

Hi Av919,

I'm sorry to hear about your GMAT. Regarding the focus edition, have you considered taking an official practice exam just to see where you stand?

I had an unexpected score on the GMAT classic today - I cancelled my score of 670. I had scored 780 and 770 in official mocks 2 and 4 respectively.

I wanted to improve my score of 740 but I could not.

GMAT classic scores seem strange these days.

Hello everyone,

I am writing this to share my recent experience with GMAT Classic edition. I had heard from numerous test takers that the difficulty level of Classic edition has increased recently and their mock scores were inconsistent with the actual attempt, but never really paid heed to the same as I did see many people scoring 700+.
I continued with my preparation without getting demotivated to increase my score of 680 to 720+. I was averaging around 720-750 in my mocks (Kaplan, Manhattan) and the difficulty level of their questions was much higher than the GMAT Prep exams. This made me confident that I would be able to achieve my target score in the next attempt.

However, I was taken aback with the difficulty of the exam when I appeared for the same today. I received 3 long passages and there was not a single question of Main Idea/Purpose/Detail of the passage and majority of the questions were hardcore CR based. I did not get stressed or lose hope and went ahead without letting the pressure impact me.

Fast forward to the Quant section, I was pretty confident that I would be able to get a Q48-49 as I was averaging about 50 in my CAT exams. The type of questions and the diffculty took me by surprise and I knew that something was seriously wrong.

I finished both the sections and by this time I was getting impatient to see my final score as there was a lot of unsurity in my mind whether I had tanked it or not. I finished my IR and AWA section with 10 odd minutes remaining and was still able to get a 7/8 on IR.

The final score of 620 flashed in front of my eyes and I cancelled them instantaneously. Just got to glance at my IR score and did not even feel like looking at Quant/Verbal split. My confidence and motivation have taken a huge blow and it pains to see my efforts going in vain.

:(

I was hoping to take an opinion about the Focus edition and will it be a wise choice to appear for it in the next 15 days. If yes, what all should I keep in my mind to prepare a strategy for my one final attempt before I submit my R2 applications.

Thanks in advance!
Hi even I took the classic edition and scored a 660 and all my friends who have been consistently high performers barely managed to scrape through the 700 benchmark. My understanding is that the sample size of the people taking the examination has decreased over the years. This has probably led to an increase of more serious performers leading to inconsistent percentiles. Although I could be wrong here and would appreciate the experienced members of the group to correct me.

Before (Sample ESR of 2017 with sample size: 757,037)

After (My ESR of Jan 2024 with sample size: 282,098)

Hi manrasingh,

Yes, the number of test takers has fallen quite a bit (discussed here). And you're right: the proportion of serious, motivated test takers could have gone up, and this could have pulled (for example) some of the percentiles around the 700 mark down (percentiles for 740+ total scores weren't affected).

However, the first part of what you said isn't quite right. Percentiles have no impact on the difficulty of the test itself, so your friends were not disadvantaged by that. Even though a 700 became more common, the (absolute) difficulty of the old GMAT had most likely not changed.
