b. Combining three big application packages, a test of the windows operating system that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995 that Bill Gates created.
c. When the windows operating system created by Bill Gates was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995, three big application packages had been combined in it.
d. Three big application packages, combined in Bill Gates’ test of the windows operating system in 1995 that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign.
e. When Bill Gates tested the windows operating system that was scheduled for a mass distribution campaign in the United States in 1995, he combined in it three big application packages.
Dear Mike,
I found this question in one of the GMATClub tests. The correct option is E. However, I found option E not to be completely correct. As in, it leaves out the word "creator" from the composition, thereby suggesting a change in meaning. I wanted to know if official questions confuse us this way, or should I just let this one pass? Is my thinking correct?
Also, could you point out the errors in Option C.

I'm happy to respond.
This official question is perfectly fine. This is a very subtle point. Yes, it's important to preserve the original meaning, but it's very important not to be fundamentalist. Choice (E) doesn't use the words "creator" or "created", but it's clear that Bill Gates has the most significant role, because he was the one testing in and determining its contents --- that sounds very much like a creator. Bill Gates exact role is not the focus of the sentence, and what is implied here is close enough to the original meaning that it's not a problem.
Choice (C) is weak and passive. See:

The passive is acceptable when we don't know the actor, the doer, but here we absolutely know the doer, Bill Gates, so there's no excuse for putting it in the passive. Furthermore, in the second part, "three big application packages had been combined in it," it's unclear who the doer is, and the implication is that it's not Bill Gates, because he is mentioned in the first part and no explicit connection is made to him in the second part. Also, this choice leaves out the important step of "testing," which is different from the other steps mentioned. Both of these definitely change the meaning.
Does all this make sense?
