Question 1: My answer is (C).
(A) The author does not offer judgment on which model is better / sounder. A businessperson deciding whether to franchise or to start up a business must weigh these advantages against the attraction of being one's own boss.
(B) No. The author seems to suggest being one's own boss is attractive to many businesspeople.
(C) Exactly. Businesspeople who dream of being their own boss may consider franchise opportunities without understanding the nature of this business model. So they must understand a business model before using it.
(D) No such indication whatsoever.
(E) The author is showing no emotion in this discussion.

Question 2: My answer is (C).
While the contract is mentioned, it is not offered as an advantage of franchising.
"The rules are stringent, and the relationship between company and franchise owner is strictly governed by contracts. The franchise owner is, in a real sense, not the boss."
Indeed, the contract must protect the interests of the franchisor rather than that of the business owner.

Question 3: My answer is (B).
Even (B) does not really weaken the idea that the franchise business model does not afford franchise owners the opportunity to be their own boss.
If we accept that "not being their own boss" means its business is under contract with a powerful franchisor, who dictates operation procedures, controls supplier, and may sever the relationship without consent", (B) hardly changes the fact.

(A) Companies have the right to rescind a franchise contract if the owner fails to follow the company's procedures and service style as required.
Here, "companies" should refer to franchisors. This option shows that business owner are indeed subordinated to franchisors. It does not weaken the idea.

(B) After a franchise is successfully started, the company requires less hands-on control over daily operations.
Hmm. It actually costs money to provide hands-on control / mentoring. If the company requires less hands-on control over daily operations, certainly franchisors are happy to let them operate more independently. Does it weaken the idea? Hardly so, let alone "seriously weakens". But this is likely the correct answer in the eye of the test maker.

(C) Entrepreneurs running start-ups are often restricted by market conditions and local regulations and must abide by operating procedures mandated by their insurers and financiers.
Irrelevant. We are talking about franchise business owner.

(D) Franchise owners sometimes have opportunities to move into the company's management structure and advance to high positions.
"sometimes" is weak. Is that once in a blue moon?
And, even if someone sometimes move into the management structure, even to the top position as CEO, he or she is still an employee of the management /franchisors company. It is not the opportunity to be their own boss.

(E) Successful franchise owners may eventually run several franchise locations.
So they must make more money. But they are still under strict control of franchisors.

So, I guess (B) is the correct answer, but I am not convinced.

zhanbo I agree with you; answer option (B) is a weak weakner but at the same time it is best among the five. We are not looking here for a perfect answer rather the best answer among the five.
