Hi Blair15,

Taking an individual section of the GMAT - outside of the context of taking a FULL, adaptive CAT - isn't a great way to measure your overall ability level (since doing so removes many of the factors that can impact your performance on the Official GMAT).

When we last discussed your studies (back in January and February), you had taken just a few CATs/mocks. How have you been scoring on your CATs since then? When was your most recent CAT and what were your Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores?

Hey I took the official Mock test (mba.com) last week and scored 690 (q49, v34). Yesterday when i took the Verba GMAT club test, i got V23. This has really confused me and also demoralised me a little since my GMAT is 10 days from now.

Hi Blair15,

If you weren't already familiar with some of the questions on your official practice test, that 690 should be reliable. This doesn't mean that you will definitely get that score on the exam (score variation, exam pressure), but it's a good sign.

All the best.

Yes, i hadn't solved any of those questions before. Nothing was familiar.

Hi Blair15,

Assuming that your Overall Score Goal is still 700+, and that you took this CAT in a realistic fashion that matches-up with how you will take your Official GMAT, then you could potentially hit that Goal on your actual GMAT in 10 days. Since you're now fairly close to your Official Test Date, you have to be careful about doing too much studying (re: we do not want you to accidentally "burn out" before then). You could safely take one more CAT/mock (just not too close to Test Day), but you should limit your studies to general practice and light review NO 'cramming'); the focus now is to keep your overall skills sharp, not try to measure/score them over-and-over. You would be better served by getting some extra rest so that you can go into Test Day calm, clear-headed and ready to work.

Hey Rich,

I have 2 more official mocks left and since i am a working professional i was thinking of taking the mock next sunday (4 days before my main test). Is this alright? Also, How many hours of daily studying until my GMAT would you suggest?

Hi Blair15,

I typically recommend that GMATers take their last CAT before Test Day about 1 week before. You might be fine taking that last CAT just 4 days before - as long as you give yourself some downtime in the 3 days afterwards so that you're not too tired for your Official GMAT. With a Thursday Test Date, if you are currently working a full-time job, then you also have to be mindful about balancing your work responsibilities with a light study schedule AND the necessary rest time - so that you have the proper energy and clear-headedness to perform at your best on the Official GMAT. At this point, you don't necessarily have to study much more - and certainly not every day - so you should consider keeping whatever remaining studying you choose to do in smaller, compact sessions (1-2 hours at a time).
