GMAT Exam Deadline for FALL 19 and IELTS vs TOEFL

Question

Dear Consultant,
I am from Bangladesh. I planned to sit for GMAT exam on 17 November, 2018 but my preparation is not good. Now I am planning to postpone my exam and hopefully I will take the exam at the end of December this year. IELTS exam in 15 January, 2019.
My concerns:
1. Will it be possible to take admission (with full scholarship) into top 300 US business school with a GMAT score of 600-650?
2. Will IELTS be okay instead of TOEFL?
I have above average academic results but no extra-curricular activities.

Hi there! I'm not sure if you meant to say top 300 schools or if you meant top 30. You definitely have a shot at top 300 if that's what you meant. With a 600-650, top 30 will be a bit of a stretch. In general you want to hit and ideally exceed a school's average GMAT score so that can be a helpful guide as you evaluate your chances at a school. That said, it will also depend in large part not just on the GMAT but also on the strength of your work experience, the impact you've driven, the industry you come from (if it's engineering/tech that will be tougher since it's a very competitive demographic, hence more need to set yourself apart) and your post-MBA goals.The essays are becoming increasingly personal & it's important to show not only what you have achieved professionally but also who you are as a person. It's important to convey a unique value proposition (in other words, what is your unique story? What can you uniquely contribute) to set yourself apart, especially if you are coming from a tech/engineering background. The fact that you are from Bangladesh will help set you apart from all the Indian tech/engineering applicants but you are still in a competitive group - and if you do not have a tech/engineering background all the better in terms of differentiating yourself! So, in summary I would say, use the school's average GMAT as a guide in gauging your competitiveness, but there are definitely all these other facts that are critical to the strength of your application as well. Coming from a teaching background will make things a bit more challenging since the adcom likes to see applicants who have made impact or driven business results (increase in revenue, decrease in cost) within a company. So it will be even more critical for you to make an argument for your post-MBA goals and why you need the MBA. In business school they shy away from applicants who seem more interested in academia than in the business world so that will be something to keep in mind as you shape your goals!
