ribbons: Thank you for sharing your GMAT journey with us. I understand your disappointment with your official score of 585, especially given your mock test performance. Let's break down your scores and percentiles:Official GMAT Focus Edition: Quant: Q79 (59th percentile) Verbal: V82 (79th percentile) DI: 76 (58th percentile)

Your Verbal performance is strong, placing you in the top quartile. However, there's significant room for improvement in both Quant and DI.

It's important to note that even in your mock tests, your Quant percentile was relatively lower compared to Verbal. For instance:

  • Mock 1: Q80 (66th percentile) vs V85 (91st percentile)
  • Mock 4: Q82 (76th percentile) vs V83 (86th percentile)
This consistent pattern indicates an underlying weakness in Quant (and in turn DI) that we need to address.

To reach your target score of 705+, we need to focus on strengthening your Quant skills. Improving your Quant score from Q79 to Q85 would raise your percentile from 59th to 89th, which would have a substantial impact on your overall score. Additionally, we'll work on boosting your DI score from 76 to 80, which would move you from the 58th to the 86th percentile.

To get started on this improvement journey, I highly recommend checking out our e-GMAT PACE architecture. This will give you a clear idea of how we structure our Quant preparation and help you understand our approach to mastering these critical skills.

Given your circumstances as a student and your goal to achieve a 705+ score by September, I believe we can create a tailored study plan that fits your needs and budget. I'd like to discuss this further with you to ensure we develop the most effective strategy for your success.

Please write to me directly at [email protected]. Please mention this message. We can discuss your specific needs, review your study habits, and create a plan that maximizes your study time and resources.

Remember, improvement is always possible with the right approach and dedication. We're here to support you in reaching your target score.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi All

I have recently given my first official GMAT FE and got a super low score of 585 (Q79, V82, DI76) compared to my mocks in which I was consistently getting 695+ score.

Mock 1 655 (Q80,V85,DI83)
Mock 2 605 (Q72,V90,DI78) here I hadn’t managed to finish 2 questions
Mock 3 665 (Q79,V85,DI85)
Mock 4 695 (Q82,V83,DI85)

I have purchased the Magoosh' 12 month prep and completed it. I used the trial of e-Gmat for verbal and their seminars which were great. I studied for gmat 4hours a day for 1.5 months and can continue to do so or more as I am currently not working and have the summer off.

I am an indian engineer with mediocre gpa (3.0) and hence am aiming for 705+ for competitive B school programs

I would appreciate Experts' help strategizing for my next steps to get my dream score by September. I am a student and hence have August off to completely dedicate myself to my prep

P.S please take note that I am a student hence I cant afford exorbitant fees of private tutors, however I am open to reasonably priced real-life classes in Cairo

Any and all help would be appreciated!

Please share your detailed official report. Since your mock scores are a fair bit higher than the actual score, the mock scores will not be very useful in identifying your weaknesses. To know what to do next, we must find out what went wrong last time.

Hi ribbons,

I see you had a bad day on your GMAT, but considering how you scored on your practice exams, you are not in a terrible spot.

That said, you must continue to find your holes and fix them to improve your score. Topical practice is a great way to do that.

For example, let’s say that you want to practice Number Properties. You can do so by answering 50 or more questions just from Number Properties: LCM, GCF, units digit patterns, divisibility, remainders, etc.

After each problem set, thoroughly analyze your incorrect questions. For example, if you got a remainder question wrong, ask yourself why. Did you make a careless mistake? Did you not properly apply the remainder formula? Was there a concept you did not understand in the question?

By carefully analyzing your mistakes, you will be able to fix your weaknesses efficiently and, in turn, improve your GMAT quant skills. Number Properties is just one example; follow this process for all quant, verbal, and DI topics.

For some more advice, here is a great article you can check out:

Your biggest problem is time management.
You did not complete the DI section which dinged your score by a few points. Even if you had 10 extra seconds to randomly mark the last question, your score would have been more than 600.
You spent an inordinate amount of time on some questions in Quant which likely made you rush on others. Learn to let go, mark for review and come back later. Then you will likely not miss some details on easier questions since you will not be rushed. Otherwise you seem to be ok in all Quant topics and don't have a specific weakness. Practice higher level questions.

Analysis and Critique CRs gave you trouble. Check out here which question types they cover and work on them: https://youtube.com/shorts/1LjFJp7QkTw
